I just got my first parakeet a week ago, and they say that the piece right above it's beak, there's a name for it, but anyway if it's dark it's a male. I think that it would apply to canaries also. Hope this helps. Christine http://petshub.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi. I work for a person who raises birds. She says the way to tell if your canary is a boy or girl is that only the boys sing and the girls do not. http://petshub.com/ubb/wink.gif
I hope this helps,

To find out what your canary is (Male or Female), our club website might help a bit. The address is: www.geocities.com/Heartland/8813/SEXING.HTM. (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/8813/SEXING.HTM.)
There is a lot of good information there and the ability to talk to the experts on Canaries.

Maybe next time you can get a parakeet. The skin obove their nose, or cere, is blue
in males and tan in girls. You can also tell
if it is a baby or not. If they're a baby, they have stripes. If their an adault they have no stripes and a "necklas" on their neck.

hi ann wendy, and tweety,
just in case you havent found out yet one way is that the cock bird will sing his heart out in the spring/summer to find a mate and when moulting will be as quiet as a mouse.
another, is to place your finger between the legs of the bird and if if you can feel a wide channel that your finger sits in, then the possibillities of this being a hen is greater as the channel is the opening that the eggs would come through, but this isnt 100% reliable
