my great grandma past away 4 years ago and sugar baby was given to me. my grandmother had sugar baby for a very long time. My daughter woke me up late in the night and said sugar baby was not breathing I looked at her and she was breathing but very shallow so I took her to an animal hospital and they said the cause of death was old age. my daughter was 4 she ended up confisciating it.
I have a cage that is about 5 1/2 high and 3 1/2 wide. There are 3 pouches and lots of branches also she had a running wheel.
I was feeding her Quiko sugar glider food from petsmart I also have glider treats too.

i would highly suggest not letting a young child play with a glider, not only for the gliders safety, but also for the child.
Also, the food you are feeding is not exactly a good source of feeding for a glider.
I highly recommend a TOTALLY new diet of either the BML diet or zookeepers secret diet for a MAIN diet, then nightly giving fresh or frozen fruits & veggies. With a side of either cottage cheese or yogurt & a few meal worms.
This will help your glider to be happy, healthy, & live longer!
If you would like a good site to get good info from on feeding, handling, etc, please visit my site. WWW.Midwest-Exotics.com
We do have one joey for sale at this time that is VERY nice, but before i would ok your home i would want to make sure that he would be in good hands & not fed wrong or handled by youngsters!
We are in south bend, IN & have had lots of glider experience! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions, i would love to help.
Also, have you looked into another exotic animal for your daughter? One that would be easier to handle & care for?
Chinchillas are wonderful pets & i would also be willing to talk with you about them as we have had them for years & also breed them.
I would recommend a chinchilla over a glider for ANY young child. Especially since they live long long long lives.
They too can be seen on my site.
take care & thanks!
Good luck!

my daughter is now 8 1/2 and is an animal lover like me she would never harm any animal

Im not saying she would MEANING to, but 8 is kinda young to know & understand the right ways to handle a small animal that doesnt always want to work with you.
I guess im a little confused on the part you wrote about her harming one when she was younger. You said the glider died last week, but your daughter was 4?? Another daughter? Im seriously confused on what you ment, but either way i would not recommend allowing a 4 year old to play with a glider or any small animal for that matter no matter how much of an animal lover they are.. They just dont understand at that age.
Also ANYTHING you find in an everyday pet store to feed a glider is a no no & i believe anyone knowing anything about them will agree to that. Please find another diet for your new glider!!!!!!!
Im not at all picking on you or anything, but i wanted to provide some help to you & your daughter to prolong the life of a new pet. It will not only help the glider physically, but it also will mentally.
There is no need to jump into another rigth away. Besides give your daughter time to grieve over her lost love. Then in the meantime study up on them. Lots of things have changed in the glider world & people are learning new things on how to better care for them EVERYDAY! There is a lot to know about them & it can seriously help you & your animal friend out to have a lot of knowledge on them.
I do wish you luck & hope you take into consideration a bit of what i have said. I care about the animals & would hate for your daughter to go through another loss before she has to!

I also agree, the glider most likely did not die of old age, but of a bad diet. How old was the glider? Gliders live 10-15 years in captivity. Did the vet do a necropsy to determine the cause of death? I agree that gliders are not a good choice for children. I suggest a hampster or other small animal that is easy to care for and eats an easy diet. The reason pelleted diets are a no no for glider is beacuse they are sap suckers and only extract the liquids from their foods. Hard foods do nothing for them but cut the inside of the jaws causing lumpy jaw. They also need fruits, veggies, and insects such as meal worms or crickets (I also feed pinky mice) and vitamin and calcium suppliments. If you want to read up on gliders and theor care you can go to http://sugarglider.net

to let everyone know sugar was old when I got her she was already 8 years old and also the vet said that she was old and died of natural cause and for you all to say my daughter would harm her glider is wrong she is very mature for her age

My hubby's sis is selling her glider. She is almost 2 years old.. and very friendly. She is used to younger kids handling her. She doesn't have the time for it because of all of her cheerleading and gymnastics competitions and practices plus school.
If your interested email me at mallyk@juno.com

Again, im not saying anything against you or your daughter. She did nothing wrong & i understand that you got the glider at an older age to begin with. Im not harping on the fact of what your older one was fed, but im harping at the fact that if you get another you need to look into them a little deeper & just just jump into it because thats what your daughter wants.
Make it a learning experience for her. Make her read books, web sites, make her understand what all is REALLY required about the animal. That its not as easy as filling up the dish with a hard pellet & making sure there is water in the bottle. They need a fresh serving of fruit, veggies, store bought bugs or pinky mice, & of course the staple diet of either the BML or zookeepers secret plan!
They also really need a friend & its VERY unfair to make them live a life alone, reqaurdless of how much your daughter plays with it & how responsible she is.
Im only telling you the truth because i dont want you or your daughter to have another heartbreak, but to have a glider that is safe, healthy, happy & lives a long life with you & your family.
Telling you NOT to get her the glider is not my choice, but its yours. You have to be the responsible adult (or make your daughter) & find out as much as possible on the animals you are getting, not just replacing the one you lost. You have the knowledge to know whether or not she/you are capable of caring for this animal 100%. Your also the one shelling out the money for it, but PLEASE dont be stubborn & PLEASE read up on them as well as get them the right diet to keep them healthy. Its not fair to them to not feed them right, they cant tell you what they need. Thats why they depend on us humans to inform others by means of books, web sites, & word of mouth.. as im doing!!
I certainly have better things to do with my time that worry about what you do, but when it involves animals, & animals that i love, have had for years, breed, etc i feel its kinda my 'job' to inform people about better ways to care for their pets if they dont already know.
Its nothing personal. If you dont do it for the pet, do it for your daughter. Chances are she doesnt know enough to look them up on here & find out the right way to raise them. & i KNOW if she loved her passed one she will want to keep this new one as healthy & happy as she can!!!!!

My daughter and I went to the book store and I purchased some books about suger gliders.
The question that I have is:
Where do they sell the correct food for the gliders?
The only places we have in our area is petsmart and pet supplies plus. I look for an exotic pet store and I can't find one.
My daughter was on the net yesterday and found an glider adoption center near by. Is it okay to adopt from the center or is it better to buy a glider from a breeder? My daughter wants to adopt so she can give the sugar glider a better home than in a shelter.
Thanks for your concerns I just felt like I was being attacked!!
thanks and have a nice Thanksgiving

Pet stores do not sell approprite diets for these guys. (because comercial diets are dry pellets, and gliders are sap sukers and extract only the liquids from their foods, thus they get nothing from a dry pellet.) I suggest BML with fruits and veggies. You can find the recipe at : http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/leadbeat.html
I highly recomend getting a glider from a rescue! There are too many gliders as it is, and I do not support breeders. (because many place, such as TX, there are MANY rescues that are having to turn rescues away because they are bursting at the seams) the problem is, I still do not believe in gliders being pets for children that young, no matter how responsible you think they are!

I also recommend adopting a glider from a rescue. Just do your research on the rescue & the glider. Many gliders who are in rescues have come from not so perfect homes. Sugar Babies are very exotic and like said before- they need so much more than the everyday average pet.
If you work with your rescue home (or is it an animal shelter) they'll work with you and find the best sugar baby suitable for you & the glider.
A glider's diet needs can be met with many foods you already have in your fridge- it's just a matter of knowing what they need & putting it all together.
here's a link that list a few popular diet plans-

Also check out these forums if you already don't- you'll find lot's of great information- there is so much out there for you and your sugar baby

i dunno if i agree fully with getting a glider from a rescue. I mean yes, its a GREAT thing if you know what your getting into.
But like said, most gliders that are in rescues, adoption centers, or foster care generally are nippers/biters. Them being like that makes it hard for people to want to love them & i guess its understandable. Most older gliders are set in their ways & its terribly hard to break them on the biting habbits.
I as a breeder also take in rescues & re home them, so we arent just breed breed breed. We do help out those in need as well as produce some very nice quality, tame animals.
We have one male joey just weanable for sale at this time. I also actually just had a lady from chicago contact me with 7 that she is looking to re home. I have agreed to help out & if you are interested i would be more than happy to give you more info on any of them. There are 5 males that are fixed & 2 females. There are two females & then 2 males that are caged together. Then 3 males that are caged together. She is willing to split them up, but it would be awesome to keep any that are already together in those groups.
Again if you are interested let me know. Our pedigreed, hand tamed joey is $175.00 & the rescues are $100.00 each, $185.00 a pair, if you were to get the group of 3 males im sure she would give a better deal! They are all fairly young, none being over the age of three. The lady told me they are tame, but of course in a new home they would need a touch of work.
I do recommend getting more than one so it has a mate & doesnt get depressed.
Again, if you or anyone else is interested in ANY of these gliders please let me know ASAP!!!! The lady is ill & needs them out. I also cannot hang onto them for long as im due to have my first child soon & will be extremely pressed for time!

Oh, i forgot to add, you cant find the BML diet in stores as you have to make it from scratch..(mainly baby foods, & other store bought goodies.) Its not hard to find the ingredients.. although, you do have to get the vitamins & calcium in the pet store.. im sure you can get that at pet smart /co.
I (& my gliders) really like the zookeepers secret a lot though. Its easy to feed, not messy, you dont have to make it, relativly cheap, & the gliders dont walk through it.
Everyone also has their own ways to make the BML so you may find recipes that vary a bit. We like to feed that on occasion so they still get it since they DO LOVE it a lot. (although it is a toss up between the ZKS & the BML.)
Here is the link to the ZKS diet.
