Right after birth gerbils mate within two or three minutes, correct? Well, does this post-birth breeding impregnate the female? I'm worried because I don't want another litter after this one, and she's due any time. We'll have an empty cage tomorrow, though. And they were mating today, too... It's kind of confusing.

Well with my Grace, when she was pregnant, she and Kipp didn't start mating again for a few good hours.
I dont know whether anyone else has done it but maybe you could put them into a split cage for, say, the next day or so, so her heat will wear off and he wont be able to impregnante her. *BUT* I dont know whether she will go into heat later while suckling the current litter.

I have had them mate right after, hours and even a day after giving birth, it really depends on the gerbil.

If you do not want more litters split the pair but if you saw them mating it is too late, take him out before the next litter is due (when she starts to look like she swallowed a cherry tomato) and leave him in to help her raise the babies from this one.

Good luck!!

So she is pregnent now, but they are mating while she's pregnant?

How many litters has she had?
If she's allready had a couple, you can take Dad out and have her raise this last litter on her own, many gerbil mom's do it without any problems.

After thinking about it, maybe she's not pregnant? IDK what to think anymore! All I know is I'm getting him outta there. I didn't really want any more gerbils, but my mom put them together and convinced me to do it (teehee gotta love them baby gerbies! look at their witty nakie tails! LOL). Yea, he's coming out today. She must not be pregnant or something...
