It is normal. Also more healthy then you think. They need to chew to wear down their teeth. Some hamsters no matter what you give them they will still chew the cage... You can try to give 'em chew sticks. The best idea I can give you is to change to a 20 gallon tank and give the hamster things to chew on. You can't stop it any other humane way and I wouldn't recommend trying.

Happend to me. I tried keeping him in the other room at all times but I missed him. It's a responsibility of a pet, knowing what they do. They are nocturnal. Just get used to it, and you'll be okay. Once your used to it, it wont bother you.

My Hammie did that for the first month or so after I got him, chewing the cage bars like a maniac all night long!! Drove me crazy, but then one day, he just stopped. I wonder if he was just marking his territory, lol!! No idea but I did have to keep him in another room at night during that phase! :p

Don't sweat ur self. It is practically normal. I just got 2 hamsters for my birthday last week. you just flick there nose or tap them and they should stop. I went through the same thing and mine stopped ypu just have to show them whose in charge and soon they will stop the biting.Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

okay, petlover13, you are either a troll or someone who should have their hamsters taken immediately.

you NEVER use punishment with hamsters or other rodents. they are NOT cats or dogs and do not respond to this. hamsters chew and that is that. "showing them who's boss" only makes them afraid of you and you wind up with poorly socialized, nippy and frightened hammies. you should be ashamed of yourself.

this is yet another case to prove why animals should never be given as presents. they often wind up with people who would not know proper pet care if it bit them in the...ahem...toe.

OMG do not FLICK AN ANIMAL, ANY ANIMAL, on their nose or ANYWHERE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER! Their noses are like the most sensitive spot on their entire bodies the poor thing was (is) probably traumatized. Sheesh! You are a giant compared to that tiny little animal, it's probably scared senseless. Shame on you :(

Ok, I saw this and i've literally seen red. How can anybody justify "tapping" something on the nose to stop it biting. Is this person on the same planet as everyone else?!
Ok, picture this - you are as you are now - imagine something the size of a skyscraper coming along and doing their version of a "flick" on your nose - do you think that wouldn't hurt, because if you think it doesn't you're seriously deluded. And that would be the equal of a human flicking a hamster, a human being flicked by something as tall as a skyscraper (if you consider all relative size differences).
This is just blatent animal cruelty, and it just goes to show what happens when people are brought animals as "presents" who really have no clue how to look after them.
I'm not even getting into how trying to fear train animals doesn't work and should never ever ever ever ever be done.

I actually came here FROM the fish forums when I saw her attitudes about the LIVES of her fish.....I would be seriusly worried about this kid if I were either of her parents....

Aye, I started looking through her posts after what she said on the fish forums. Her attitude towards pets is disgusting.
