hi,
im new,
ive been researching over the last day and found this site.
my story:
i got my hamster on xmas day, a syrian... he was 6 weeks old... anyway one time that day when i cheked on him, he had bleeding, but i couldnt tell if it was a wound or rectal... now dont get me wrong, i have looked all over the web and i cant come to a conclusion. so he was dragging himself along with what looked like 'snooty' blood, kinda sticky and bulgy. he got warm and went to sleep. i couldnt take him to vet because of xmas day... so now its boxing day and hes still sleeping... hes moved once to sleep in a different place... hes not bleeding, all the blood is dry, but that little piece of blood still seems to be there.
please help :(

Try to clean up the blood and see if you can find a surefire orifice it came from.
If not, even if you do, try to get him to drink some water and just let him rest for now. Watch his eating, drinking, and potty patterns.
Hopefully all will go back to normal and he just got a little boo-boo.

It is hard to say right now owing to the minimal symptoms you described. it doesn't seem like much - but with these animals you never know. You did not even tell us WHERE the blood was seen. So I can't say.

I believe they mentioned the rectal area.

even if it's not a male, hammies don't bleed through their nether regions. also, being sucha teeny creature, any amount of blood loss is usually not cool and can make them very ill. unless you see an external boo boo on your hammy, i really suggest taking him to see a vet. :(

I have never had rectal bleeding in a ham, and I have had and have dozens. (?). Call a vet for free advice, but find a good hamster vet first by asking around such as a pet stores and shelters.

Look around before you get another hamster. See how the hamsters act, are they active? is the cage clean? Is it to cramped? Is there food and water? Have an employee hold the animal, are they shy to hold the animal?
Also how big was the housing?
I'm very sorry this happened :(
Good luck with your next one.

I am very sorry for your loss...
Well, maybe you would like to try owning a dwarf hamster. There are 4 kinds of dwarves, Campbell Dwarf (Russian dwarf), Winter white dwarf (siberian dwarf), Roborovski dwarf, and Chinese dwarf.
They are all very cute. They can be kept in pairs or small groups of the same sex. And they are significantly smaller. I own a Campbell dwarf, this is a picture of what they look like:

They are very cute! :D
Good luck with finding a new hammie!
