I have two Aussie mixes, one male and one female. When we go for a walk in my neighborhood, the male cries, whines, and barks as loud as he can. It sounds like he is being beaten which not only makes the other dogs in the neighborhood bark but causes the neighbors to come out of their houses to see who is beating their dog. It is embarassing, annoying and makes me not want to take him out. Does anyone know how to make him stop?
By the way, we used to go jogging together all the time in an area without other dogs near my apartment and there was never a problem. It started when we moved to a house where there are other dogs in the neighborhood but he doesn't hardly ever bark in the yard.

Ah, i have a australian cattle dog that would do. Did EXACTLY what you describe, it was embarassing.
She was about a year when she did that. Shes grown up since then and has stopped. What helps is taking them to like a petstore that allows other dogs in it, and making your dog sit and stay.
Did you ever take your guy to obediance training? My mom and I are going to do that for our little miniature schnauzer and my cattle dog, just to work on some things.
Also, does you dog like water? Because my dog doesn't like water from a spray bottle, so i would carry that with me, and when she would act up, i would spray her and say "NO"
Good luck.

First of all, our pets aren't trying to embarrass us. They don't even know what it means. They don't fuss and whine without good reason. Always investigate a possible physical or emotional cause. Does pavement hurt your dogs feet? Is there a hidden joint or bone injury. Is your dog afraid of other dogs in the neighborhood? In any case, there's no reason to punish a pet by making it sit or stay in unfamiliar surroundings. And how would we like it if Mom or Dad squirted water on us and shouted "No" when we get upset?

Patience...understanding....determine the cause.

I'm pretty positive he isn't bothered by the sidewalk or in pain. He doesn't do it when he is outside of the neighborhood (like on a major street) but he carries on so much that we can't get out of the neighborhood. His sister doesn't do that and because he doesn't really bark or carry on when he's in the yard, I thought maybe someone could tell me why he is doing it or what I can do to stop it.

Making dogs sit & stay isn't punishing them.. it is making them focus their attention on the owner rather than what is bothering them. :)
Squirting water at them isn't necessarly bad either. Again, It distracts their attention and if they don't like it they know that everytime they whine or bark they are going to get a spray of water and a firm NO. I know several people that use a squirt bottle to make their dogs stop barking. My trainer recommended it to a labrador owner that would bark if a butterfly flew into their yard.. .. but a squirt of water and a NO BARK would make him stop. I know it made my dogs leave my christmas presants alone. lol
But I agree that you should make sure he doens't have bad joints, back or hip problems. ;)

My dog has no problems like that. My dogs problem was other dogs. She LOVES other dogs and wants to meet every single dog she sees.
And yes the sit and staying has the dog focus on the owner, not what it is barking at.
And the embarassing part is when they sound like you are beating them.
But i learned getting mad just makes the dog act up even more.
What my mom also suggested for me (since i am the one that trains my dog) is tell the dog its ok, don't get mad, continue walking, and if she continues give a firm NO.
Personally i liked the water bottle.
But something different works for different people/dogs.
