I bought a new parakeet on Wednesday and I'm very worried about it. Although I know there's an adjusting period for the bird in its new home, I'm worried because he won't eat. He hangs out on one of his perches all day and doesn't play with any of his toys. He's only started chirping in the last day or two because he heard the birds outside. He has improved from the first day I brought him home. He at least lets me change the paper in the cage, he looks at me when I talk to him, and even let's me put my hand in the cage to move items. I don't mind if he's a cranky bird but I want to make sure he doesn't starve to death.
Also, there are no visible signs of illness.

Mine was the same way when I brought her home.I was told it was because she was lonely so I got another one and she perked up within minutes of my putting the new bird in the cage. So that's my advice for you http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif I hope this helps.

If you plan to make your budgie into a pet, I wouldn't get another one. This may make it to where your budgie will never tame. That is what happened to me. Are the food cups near the bottom of the cage? It might be too scared to go off of the top perch. Also, it could be eating you just aren't around to see it.

how many toys?
are there too many?
if there are too many he/she will feel unsecure and unsafe owing to all the different things around he/she.
aslong as there are husks on the floor and your having to clean the cage is a good sign that it is messing as it needs to eat to mess(!).
after a few days often 10 - 14 the bird will come round when all the fuss of the new addition to the family has died down and there is only the bird and yourself he / she will take more notice of you and will soon start to communicate.
hang on in there....

Having similar trouble. Doesn't seem to be chirping very much. Seems friendly, but not real happy. In a good-sized cage w/out a lot of clutter. I have other birds, this is my first budgie. Advice would be appreciated!!

Ok, I've had the parakeet for about three days now, And it seems to be having the same trouble as you. But, all you need to do is give it more attention. My bird, Bootsy, already likes me even though I just got him.

Buddgies... especially baby ones are fairly quiet... none of ours really made any noise for about 10-14 days... my nans took a month... not really unhappy... just a bit nervous.... like "if i squeak i'll be noticed" try taking in garden... and piutting under tree so they can hear other birds...
