We finally got some pictures of our dwarf hammie, Gizmo, on Photobucket. There are only a few, I am sure you can all appreciate how hard it is to get good pictures of a very active hamster! We will be posting more pics soon including his sweet housing situation, he was a very spoiled boy over Christmas! I hope you enjoy our pics...

Hey, don't they say pink is the new black for men?

I hope you all enjoyed the pics as much as we do. Take care!

Wow...nice hamster you got there. I'm either getting a syrian or dwarf. I've had 3 syrians figured I might try something new not sure yet though.

Thanks, he is our little pride and joy. I would highly recommend a dwarf, but obviously I am a bit biased. I just wish we would have been less cynical about housing dwarves together when we got him. If we knew what we do now we would have got a couple. We would like to have a Syrian but right now we only have housing appropriate for a dwarf. He sure is a riot though :)

Should have asked here first.

I got a mom, babies, and aunt early in December. The aunt also had a litter a few weeks later. I sexed them and separated them by gender. I now have a happy group of six females, and one of three males.

Always separate OUT the young of a first litter if a new litter appears until the second batch are 3 weeks old. As they are young, you still might be able to successfully intro both litters (of the same gender) to each other. Worked for me.

I guess in reality even if we knew they would be ok to house together we still may not have gone through as at our local pet store they claimed that they were "too young to determine their sex" which was a crock but anyway. Also they were too squirmy for us to be able to see their gender. We are far too scared of ending up with a male and female housed together and getting more hammies than we can handle. It's too bad some pet stores are so uncooperative and unfortunately there aren't any breeders anywhere near our area (that we have been able to locate anyway).

^ i have the same problem hun. i'm looking into getting a couple of dwarves in a few weeks and the only place to get them here is a completely inhumane pet store that mistreats the animals terribly. as i said in another thread, the other night i was there checking the mice and there was a mama campbell dwarf, sitting on a little of two day old pups, with two VERY aggressive males on her, mating with her, and she was squealing. when i complained the qorker said, "yeah, they're always at that". it's the reason i don't have dwarves already. i can't live with myself after pumping money into that slumhole of a pet store. to think, it's a large chain as well in atlantic canada.

i've spoken to the other pet store about dwarves and they said they can do a special order but it's pretty much a "whatever you get, you get" type thing as you don't get to see the hams beforehand. when they come in you are committed to buying them, regardless. i'm afraid of winding up with poorly bred, and poorly socialized little critters. ugh.

it's a difficult decision when you don't have many options.
