Hi - my name is Rhonda and I have male and female black bear hampsters. They had babies, a little over a week ago. Today the mother kicked one of these out of hiding and when she saw it she tried to eat it. I took the baby out and need to know what to feed it, formula? Will it live? The others are there I did lift up the house and they are alive, the father has just gone in there yesterday or today so I think they are getting older. Their eyes are NOT open yet.
Please help!

i have never raised hammies myself, but from the experience of others i would have to say you should not have removed the baby. if the mother was going to eat it the baby was probably weak, sick, etc. mother hammies usually know what to do and you should trust their instincts. if she cast out this one baby there was a reason she did so. the chances of it surviving without the mother at such a young age are almost none. you should have let nature run its course.

Well first off, you should take out the male. Teddy bear hamsters (Syrians really...) are solitary and don't like to have others in the cage with them.
With the baby.... well since your scent is on it, if you put it back in the cage, the mother or father will DEFINATLY eat it... So I dunno, look on the internet for feeding orphaned hamsters. The internet is bound to get you some info on what to do.
Oh, and how many did they have? Do you have homes lined up? They all need separate cages when they are older you know... Was this a surprise birth? Or purposly?
