Just today a bit of hair matted up on the back of the neck of my hamster, and when I cut it off I noticed that he lost of bit of hair there. Has anyone's hamster experienced this before? Is that a skin disease and should I be taking him to see a vet? Thanks for any response.

I have never had that problem but if your worried maybe you should take him to the vet, it might be fleas or mites. My mouse was missing fur when he had mites but I dunno my hamsters have never done that! Is there scabs like your ham was scratching?

To be on the safe side you should probably take him to the vet.

Yes, it might be mites. Here is a home remedy if you see little black things moving in his fur:
THE HOMEMADE ANTI-MITE RECIPE FOR HAMSTERS!
1 pint of room temperature water
1 Tablespoon of Witchhazel
1 Tablespoon of Listerine (not flavored)
TREATMENT PROCEDURE:
Apply the solution to the mite infected hamster externally with a washcloth or put the solution in a spray bottle and lightly spray the hamster while being careful to protect the eyes, nose and mouth. After you treat the hamster it is important to clean your hamster's cage and accessories thoroughly, change the bedding and spray the solution lightly in the cage and on the hamster's toys and accessories.
Witchhazel can often be found in grocery stores but is more commonly found at your local drug store.
Please note: This is not to be taken internally, it is a topical (on the skin) treatment.
This is from a website, not from me! :p Good Luck!
