i was just wondering how many of you got your dogs from pet store's, and how many of you got them from breeders? I got my dog (Fred) from a breeder. Dogs from breeders live in much better living conditions, and are not purchased from puppy mills.

I have 5
two are purebreds.
ALL are rescued or from shelters.
My husband also has a dog , a purebred, rescued.
I have have a pure husky, rottie and boxer.
The others are lab/rottie cross, huskey/aussie cross, and something so big and ugly we can only guess at boxer, chow, shephard and ???????
I have had purebred aussies, purebred shelties, and too many mutts to think about over the last 40 years. ALL either resuced or adopted from shelters.

We got our Mia, a 3 year old Llasa Apso purebred from a breeder. She is a wonderful dog and we just love her. If I could ever figure out how to post a pic of her I would. She's adorable.

Right now I have 2 purebred Jack Russell Terriers, I got each of them from a different breeder.
I also have a Rott/Lab that I got from a backyard breeder, who tried passing them off as purebred Rottweilers !:fangel:
When I was living at home my parents always had Boston Terriers, and they were purchased from breeders.
As a teen, my parents let me get a puppy and she was born to a German Shepherd in the neighborhood, the men who owned the GSH, moved out and left the puppies behind.:aeek2:
We found homes for them all and the best I can figure is they were crossed with Border Collie.
As it turns out she was a one in a million dog !! Never will there be another Hildegarde again..... She lived to the wonderful old age of 14yr.:angel5: And when I pass , I hope to see her again !!:agree:

My dad got our Mist from a hill sheep farmer in Scotland. He was selling a litter of puppies cheap because his 2 working dogs managed to get together when the bitch was in season. He decided to let the bitch have the pups. Most of them went to other farmers he knew.
Our Jess, we bred ourselves. Jen was from a breeder and Bess, my dad bred from Jen and Monty. We bred Monty ourselves but he died in September last year from Kidney failure. He was old though.
There aren't really many pet shops at all in the UK that sell pups or kittens now. I know of one that used to sell them but not sure if they still do. I wouldn't buy one from a pet shop anyway.

both of my dogs found me-
sirius showed up one saturday while we were working in the yard and mom gave him some water and the next thing you know, he found his way inside the fence and decided to stay.
Lila was a puppy of some dogs down the road and the bigger dogs picked on her so she came to our house and we fed her and she decided to stay, too. mom told the guy that his puppy was at our house and he didn't care. said it wasn't his dog, though it's always in his yard.
we got hermione the same way. her mother, kinky, we called her, becaseu her tail was broken and bent over at the end, was a ferrel cat who had three kittens. we fed them all- (we feed anything that looks hungry- mom says i have dr dolittle syndrome) and tamed 2 of the kittens but a neighbor was feeding them, too, so when we moved we agreed with her to just took hermione.
we lived in a small, but crowded 'city' then where a lot a strays wonder around trying to find food/water/homes. there were always 5 or 6 dogs outside the grocery store and mom would always buy a pack of hotdogs to pass out to them. they had no animal control laws or leash laws so there were strays everywhere.

Please yo do not have to respond to this...it's just a comment.
Be aware that there are RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS & IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDERS. And most fall into the irresponsible catagory unless there was some major footwork involved.
So just becuase someone buys from a breeder doesn't always mean it's a good choice, it can still be as bad a choice as a Pet Store.

this is true. up at my cottage one summer we were at the local general store and there was an add on the bulletin bord that said: Pure bred English Springer Spaniel pupies for sale, so the next day we went up to the location that was printed on the add. When we got got there the first thing that we did was check out what the pupies parents, uncles and aunts were like. They were all very nice dogs, then we went up to the pupies they were all very nice pupies. so we decided on a puppy and got him. Right now he is 9 years old, his name is Fred and he is the best dog that we have ever had. You are right not all breeders are good, but the one that we got our dog from was a good breeder.

I agree 100% brandy pup!! BIG difference between responsible and irresponsible breeders. I searched for months before I found a breeder I wanted to deal with (when we were going to get a Min Pin but ended up adopting Panzer Lee instead). And when I was looking for pug breeders, I never did find one anywhere close to where we were that I wanted to deal with. So you hit that right on the mark, IMHO.

Both my 14 yr old lab/sheltie mix and my 2 year old rotty are both shelter rescues. And I couldnt ask for better babies. I will only get rescue babies. After Abby I am am hooked to rescues. I rescue myself so I have a feeling one of these days one of my fosters will become another baby of mine.

I got my aussie from a breeder, whom, I did not realize this at the time I got her, but I think they are not responsible at all. I don't think that they realize what they were/are doing. My puppies parents are both genetically blue merles and as some of you prob. know that is not good. I think and hope that my puppy is fine, but one of her sisters was almost all white with two blues eyes. They think she is deaf in one ear and I think more than that is wrong. I haven't seen the other puppies since I got mine. I got my dachshund from my father...we occasionally breed our dogs. But very seldom. We always make it a point to talk to potential owners about what will come next and we have parents on site as well as grandparents and their bros. and sis. I always try to tell people how important resuce is and mutts make really great dogs. But boy, I LOvE my wennie doggies! but what am I talking about, I love all dogs! lol Sorry for so much writing.
