Will he ever sit still!

Hiya

I have only had my hammy since Saturday. He seems ok with my hand in the cage, and will walk over it and on it if he needs to! But I have let him out a couple of times and he's wondered off! Once under the tele, and last night he went under the bed. How do you play with your hammy and keep him in one area? As im a bit limited on space in my flat, so a run isnt really possible. Will he ever sit on my hands without wanting to escape?!?

He's a syrian male. And very sweet!

hamsters will wander, so that's why you hammy-proof the room. you cannot make a hamster sit still as they are scurriers. on top of that, syrians are very independent, solitary animals who would much rather be on their own than held in one spot.

dwankrista's right (interesting name btw.......!) its in their nature to wander about and he'll be naturally attracted to dark, safe spots like under the telly and under the bed. He's foraging for food, you can make it more fun for him by leaving a treat here and there. Half the fun of having a hamster is searching for it when it's off on it's travels!
You've got to be careful that he can't hurt himself though, just check that there's no wires for him to chew or furniture to wedge himself behind - no matter how narrow the gap, you can be sure he'll try! He might try to climb stuff as well, like curtains and furniture, so beware of him falling. A small run or cornered off area is safer.
And no, he'll probably never sit still on your hand. He'll run up your arm, down your back and on to the floor, or maybe up your sleeve, but he'll never sit still!

yer mine never sat still dont worry there thing is to run and will never gat tired allthough i wouldn't worry about getting a pen just try new things like putting him up your sleve of getting a load of cardboard tubes and join them together mine loved that and it dosent take up alot of room gat some new toys or something just to keep them happy lol and like lonestar says he will never sit still lol hope we were some help

I don't mind at all that he doesn't sit still, I suppose I am just trying to find out as much as I can so I'm prepared! I am gonna get him a little indoor run, one that collapses flat as I live in an apartment, got new toys coming too, lots to keep him occupied!

But for a little one who is normally so active, he didn't get out of his bed last night! I even got up in the early hours....but still no sign. He's ok as I did a quick check on him, just snoozing it would seem!?
