Hello,

My hammy was ok when I got him, for a couple of days anyhow. Then he went all unsocial and wouldn't leave his house, even at night it would seem!

So after being like this for around 3 days, I took a decisive step to try and bring him out of his early retirement. I sectioned off a bit of a run, and fiiled it with his toys and some tubes and let him out. But he didn't even wanna go out, he just put his head undernieth himself and curled into a little ball in the corner of his cage, which I took the top off.

So my boyfreind gently picked him up and held him for a few mins and hoped this would help, but he nibbled him, not a proper bite, but I think he was trying to?? Although he wasnt struggling to get away or anything. So we gently placed him into this playpen where he ran into the corner and buried his head again. After a while, he started to have a wonder around, and then I'm sure he started to like it as he was in and out of the tubes and toys. He was occasionally trying to dig through the carpet, does this mean anything?? I was sat in his pen adn he was happily running through my legs etc? :D

While he was playing I had a good clean out of his cage so it was nice and fresh, when putting him back in, he seemed quite active for a few mins, and then returned to his house and didnt come out again!?

Should I carry on with this for a while to help him get used to being out and about? Or do you think that he is just antisocial, as I beleive he is around 4 to 5 months old when we got him. Would that be the problem? Is he too set in his ways now?

I need help as I'm worried that he will always be like this if I don't try to help him?? :(

syrians are not social animals anyway. they are naturallysolitary. however, any change in behavior requires a vet visit. small critters are prey animals and hide illness. when we see changes and symptoms it usually means it's serious. your ham needs a vet.

Yes, you should call a vet and get him a check-up. He seems very sleepy and it sounds like he isn't in the mood for playing. Usually, hamsters at that age should enjoy playing out of the cage, and going on the wheel. Something is wrong, so, since you are worried, take him to the vet.
