Is it alright to use newspaper as bedding? I don't have any right now, so I used a paper shredder and some old newspaper to make some for Peanut tonight.

My paper shredder is old, so it only cuts one way vertically.. she is loving it! lol. She keeps walking through it like its one big forrest.

actually, newspaper contains inks which are toxic to small animals. torn up paper towels or even shredded plain paper is much better and poses much less of a risk.

I agree i would remove the newspaper and replace it with something else.It would be best if you go out and buy bedding for your hamster though.

Use unscented toilet paper / kitchen towels. Much better as bedding as a temporary measure but go out there and get bedding ASAP. I use cat litter and it works great !

Cat litter? I don't think that that's a good idea... No. Not a good idea.

it depends on what you mean by "cat litter". if it's yesterday's news, it's fine. if it's a clay based litter is isn't a good idea.

Ah ! Sorry for the confusion/panic.

The cat litter I am referring to are old recycled paper that's grey and comes in little pellets. A lot of pet stores in Singapore use them as bedding for hammies and they work wonderful (ie. don't smell!).

Here in the UK we have two types of cat litter which are ok to use - Biocatlit which I think is like 'yesterday news 'over there, and wood based cat litter. Both of which are great at keeping odours at bay.
