We have had our hamsters for quite some time now and for some reason, not sure if from the move or what, but they have been going to bathroom way more than usual and it even smells worse than usual. We can't keep up with the bedding and everyting else!! Does anyone have some suggestions of why this could be or what do to limit the smell??

What kind of hamsters are these, and how many do you have? Maybe they have diabetes....

I had one teddy bear hamster for a couple years and then we adopted another one a couple days ago, they know eachother, the one we "adopted" was my sisters. I hope they don't have diabetes, they aren't too old, but i should check out local vets in the area, thanks for the idea, i would of never of thought of that!!!

are you using a pine bedding? it's not only dangerous to the hamsters, but when a hamster (or rabbit, or guinea pig or anything else) urinates on pine, it gives off a gas thats harmful. it eventually kills the animal, but also increases the smell of their urine (or so I was told months ago) :)

also, you mentioned they're females. females go into heat and give off a repugnant odor.

also, are they housed together? teddy bears are syrians and cannot be housed together and must stay alone or they will eventually fight to the death.

update!!

I brought them to the vet and they are both ok, just what you had said, going through that time, so it gets stinky. I did not know that they had to be seperate but the vet made that comment too, so they are now seperated. My friend has also given me this stuff called Eco-pets that she got online. So far it has worked wonders!!!! Thanks everyone for your comments, they just needed some tlc and we needed this eco-pet stuff, lol. If interested the website is, eco-pets.com.
Thanks guys!!

that's great to hear! kudos to you on taking your little sweeties to the vet. it's great to see someone being responsible with their little critters and treating them like they deserve to be treated. you've proven yourself a responsible and worthy hammy parents. :)

*hugs* Thank you! So happy to hear of such a good hammy mommy. I was getting a little tired of the horror stories, ya know.

Glad they are all ok!

:) thanks everyone for all your support! but just to give you an ever more updated update, lol. They are back to full health and loving life. Yeah the vet can be expensive but it needs to be that way at times, part of having pets!! Oh and FYI this ecopets stuff rocks! i love it! and it doesn't bother the hammies at all, its totally natural! Hope everyone has a great st. patty's day-propeller
