I can see getting your foot caught in that too, it will happen to anyone, with anykind of equipment you use. It looks like it also takes up unnecessary room in the inside of the stirrup, and that could cause problems too.
Maybe I'm wrong I dont know, it just looks weird. I dont know that they would allow it in a hunter class in the US.

maybe theyre for people who need alot of extra security, like people going though marshes.

They are really good for keeping your position no matter what your doing!! It is impossible for your feet to fall through and they are thin so don't really take any space up inside your stirrup irons. You will find that most people ride in the wrong side which causes a lot of problems.

They are uncomfortable for a while cos they stretch your calf muscles( most people don't actually ride with their heals down all the time) but once your calf muscles are used to being in that position there fine!!!!!!!!!!!
