At the stable where i work, most of the horses have thrush, which doesent seem like a problem at all, except for a foul smell in the hoof.
My question is, can thrush cause any problems other than the smell? will it damage the hoof?
my second question is about deworming, I was looking through horse catalog today and noticed that they have horse food(pellets) and it has deworming medicine in it already, all u do is mix it with regular food.. Will this work better than using the syrenge method?
Thanks

I don't think that the nethod of worming really matters as long as they get it every spring and fall. I think that the method of worm medicine used is really up to your personal preference.
Thrush, on the other hand, is something to be concerned about. It has been known to cause lameness as well as that foul smell. I am thinking that if you soak the hoof in either water/epison salt or water/bleach. I think it is water/bleach, to kill the bacteria that caused this, it should help. There are also medicines and sprays you can get to get rid of it.. from a tack store or Co-Op. I would aslso check into the person that shoes the horses...he may be the one that is causing it.

Well as far as I know, trush ussually occurs from wet bedding, but at the stable where I work, horses are cleaned regulary, and only like 1 or 2 sometimes have soiled bedding, but still many have thrush.

you know my friend's pony had thrush and they can also get it when they stand around in a wet field. That is like the BEST place for bacteria.

thrush is not only cause by the horses stable or mucky fields. it can also be caused by the farrier not shoeing them right. but i am off to bring my horse home from the breeders. so ya'll have fun

thrush is very bad for horses. perhaps your stable needs to do more cleaning? keep away wet bedding, and watch out for mosquito infested puddles and mires around the barn. you should have a vet or very experienced horseman come look around.

thrush is bad for horses if not caught and took care of before it gets to that point. i have had a few get thrush and it isn't as bad as people say. but as far as calling a vet out to check, that maybe a good idea, just to be on the safe side with getting them over it. but as far as checking your stable, you can do that yourself. instead of having a vet bill or having to find an "experienced horseman". how does your farrier shoe? if he cuts them to short or files them the wrong way, it can make the "frog" get irratated and that can cause thrush. I still suggest mixng a little bleach and water together in a bucket and letting the hoof soak for a few ( that is if your horse isn't like mine) she dumps the water out after a few minutes. but the bleach will kill the bacteria that has set up and should help if not get rid of the thrush.

Hello im new to this site my name is Anna and i live in Bristol, where most of the time it is very wet and cold.
The answer to worming horses i shoud think is fine, people would not have designed them if it was not a affective as the usawell wormers.
Thrush, my horse has thrush but he always has a clean bed.
What i tend to do is clean the whole of the hoof with Hibi Shrub it gets ride of any infection and germs caused to the hoof you are menat to do this 2 times aday.
Good luck and write back looking forwarded to hearing from you.
