no offense man but you really do confuse me first your wanting to add to the number off animals in the world by breeding more and now you want to do good and have a non-profit shelter i would suggest going to your local shelters im sure they can tell you plenty you can even volunteer they need the help. :)

Hi,
I have a non-profit rescue in FL. I'm not sure why everyone says it costs $1000 to start. I guess it depends on the state. It cost me about $150.
It is tricky and it can take awhile if your state is slow about approving you. Here you have to send in your application/registration to the Dept. of State. Each state has this dept I assume.
To be a 501c3 go to the IRS.gov site and there is a link that mentions corporations. You are wanting to start a non-profit corporation. The IRS can approve or deny you. You'll need at least two other people to join with you. They want information just as if you were starting a huge club. Bylaws, articles of incorporation, and lots of other political sounding things. This is kinda confusing but If you have any questions just ask. If you don't need to be a non-profit don't bother. Just rescue without the official title and just let people know that you aren't doing it for money, you want to help animals and would love it if they could help you out any way they are willing. I know quite a few rescues that aren't 501c3 because they don't need it. You should have a website for your state. I'll look around online and see if I find anything.
