I'm taking a really good look at Juliet through the cage right now. Her cere seems to be clear colored on the edges, but a pale purple/blue in the middle. Is she actually a he? Romeo's is a very prominant blue, and Juliet still bows her head while Romeo plucks at her neck. That is breeding behavior right? Birds know the difference between males and females, yes? I cropped the picture I originally took of them. Can you tell by the picture? They're the same birds from the store. I know this because they were paired off at the store. Juliet is the one at the back. Can you let me know what you think or if a better pic is needed?

Just because they groom each other does not necessarily mean that one is a male and the other is a female. I have two males, and they groom each other's neck feathers.
The one in the front is definetely a male. It's hard to tell what the one farther back is, because the picture isn't that clear. It does look like a female, but I'd need a cleared more up close pic to tell for sure.

here's a better pic. When I got them on Saturday her cere was clearish in color so I'm extremely confused. They're not from the same parents, but they're supposed to be the same age. Is Juliet turning into a Julio? :(

Yeah it does appeat that Julliete is indeed a Julio. Generally the blue will get darker as they age, so yes I'd say its a boy.

dang it, what is it with me and getting males? lol Okay, if I get a female (I'm calling Petsmart tomorrow and telling them the male/female pair they sold me is a male/male pair) would both males try to mate with her or would she be okay? BTW: "Juliets" cere is looking pale again. Maybe she/he is sexually confused, I know Jules is definitely confusing me. LOL

What's the difference? If they get along why does it matter what sex they are? It is true that young males look like females when they are born, usually for about the first year (shorter in smaller species of birds I'm sure) because the mother makes the males leave the nest first, so nature has made it so they appear to be girls for as long as they need to. There are hundreds of thousands of birds out there in rescues and sanctuaries without homes (especially budgies), that I really hope you're not thinking about breeding. Just Google "bird rescue" and visit a few sites before you bring more birds into the world who could end up in the same situation.

our bird rescue i could find here is for larger birds. they didn't have budgies/canaries/finches, etc. only parrots. i've already looked. if i breed, i'll be keeping every one of the birds. the smaller birds that end up in these rescues are the ones that get turned over to the stores like petsmart and petland, possibly even petcetera (not sure if we even have one of those but it's possible).
and the difference is the the second bird "Juliet" was supposed to be female, and completely looked female until i noticed the cere changing today. Romeo is completely male and was obvious at the store, but "Juliet" looked completely female, they're days apart in age. same breeder, just not same family.
anyway, i don't care if they're both male, both female, both genders in one. i just really hoped i'd finally have a male/female pair.

the color of the cere sometimes gets darker when they are prime for breeding, so you probably have a male that isnt in breeding mode so the cere is lighter. I have noticed this with budgies I have had in the past.
