I'm looking for some first-hand knowledge. We're driving to the Canadian province of Newfoundland this summer. It's an island, so you have to take a ferry to get there. The ferry crossing is 6 hours. They do not allow you to keep your dog with you. The dog must either stay in the car or stay in one of the ship's kennels/crates. There is a special area where you can take your dog for potty-time, but only at a scheduled time. Has anyone out there ever done this trip?

Hi there,
I have not personally done the trip but I'm from Port aux Basques, the place where the ferry will be arriving. I would suggest that you keep your animal in the car because anyone can go to the animal holding area and see the animals. Personally my animals are my babies and I wouldn't want to leave them unattended were people could have unsupervised interaction with my pet. Also my keeping your animal in the car it may actually be cooler and you can go visit them when you want (I would also sneek him out for little walks because no one goes down there). Hope this was helpful.

You're confirming what I was already thinking. We will have been traveling for a few days already, and Bailey will be used to being in the back seat. She's a very good traveler and I make it very comfortable for her. I'm like you--I DO NOT like to place my sweet girl in a place where strangers can have access to her without my supervision. Thank you again for your advice.

Fireplug, I was just wondering what you do working for the Iams company? I thought that they would probably have some awesome jobs for animal lovers. Just wondering, don't mean to pry! :hyper:

Well I have heard of Iam's not treating their animals right. I researched a both sides. Iam confronted the statements made by the animal protection group. Check out this site:

I think that the situation the PETA came upon was an isolated incident. But here's a website supporting their side of the arguement:

And on another point, but it is PETA. I mean, they have Anna Nicole as a spokesperson (can she even take care of herself? she probably has an assistant for that!) ??? PETA to me is a bunch of self righteous LOUD liberals waiting to point a finger at any next moving target.
Whoops, is this going to start a big debate again Jennicat? :D

And the incident with PETA was in 2002-2003. I think IAMS has made improvements since then. Anyhow, check out the websites! :D

Yeah I think the back seat of your car is the best idea :) Where are you planning on visiting while on the rock?

FemaleCheetah, I work for Iams. With respect, are you calling me cruel? You've never met me, so how can you know me? Again, with respect, I think you're a bit cruel yourself to be badmouthing me on a thread that I started.

MTAussie--thank you for posting the IamsTruth site. Yes, I work for Iams in Consumer Care. I get a little bent out of shape when people start making slanderous generalizations about my company.
MalteseGurl--I'm going to a family reunion up on the Northern Peninsula--around Plum Point. Have not been home in probably 14 years!
