Is It true that gerbil are illegal in CA? I heard this on another forum and was curious about it. I have never owned one but they are cute. Do they make good pets?

They are, because they can survive in that climate. There are already feral gerbils in CA, who knows what it'll do to the ecosystem in the long run.

But seriously, are there any accounts of wild gerbil colonies in the United States? I don't think so. I've only read that they are illegal due to the potential that pet gerbils could become feral. As far as I know, this hasn't actually happened.

the Californian government is crazy. They ban gerbils, yet they are legal in the more suitable climates of arizona, new mex, and texas. There should be a pet-ition.

Yeah it's stupid I could own one since I live right across the border of ca techniqly I live in AZ. Although I saw them in a ca pet store about a week back they would probly get a big fine if they get caught.

I have an idea that the best way to fix a problem, is to prevent it. California already has more non-native species that any other state in the US, and 40% of those are domestics which have escaped and gone feral. I understand their paranoia.
