please help- nearly no one has responded to my previous posts. my hamster has demodex mites. i was not able to prescribe anything that will kill the mites. i was reading online that usually the prescription is amitraz dips, however my vet said that this could possibly kill my hamster if it is ingested. it will most certainly be ingested since my hamster always grooms himself after bathing.
has anyone actually had a hamster that underwent chemical dips? i would appreciate your stories. thx!

Have you tried Ivermectin? This should kill demodex mites no problem. It isnt usually a hard thing to get rid off. Treatment does take a few weeks though, with a new dose every week.
Have you treated the hamsters cage/toys etc for mites? How you got in new food and bedding as mites could be coming i on this and re-infesting your hamster. Perhaps a change of supplier/petshop would help with this part.
I think dipping would be far to severe.

hm the vet didnt suggest any ivermectin. is that an antibiotic? i use carefresh and he uses a brand new package each time the cage is cleaned (every 4 days)

No its a super mite/worm/parasite treatment. It started off being used for sheep/pigs then moved into birds and now can be used for all animals. You must get the correct strength from the vets, as a too strong dose can kill and a weak dose wont work.
Ivermectin is by far the best treatment on the market.
