I Need some help with my 3 birds please.

Last year we purchased a parakeet and a cockateil.
They lived happily in the same cage, well almost hapily...the parakeet thinks he is the boss and pushes the cockateil around. But over all everyone got along just fine and dandy.
About a month ago our parakeet flew away, or so we thought. My step so was so upset that we ran out to the store and got another one. The very next day our original parakeet came back. Now we had three birds in one large cage.
The two parakeets hit off right away and now ...well shall we say...they need a room. Kissing and talking to each other.
Whats the problem??? the original parakeet kicks the cockateil out of the gae and sometimes even off the cage.
Are my two little "lovebirds" ready to mate? do they really need their own room?

Thank you for any help you can give me.
Patty

Yes they are budgies. They are both green.

And thank you for your reply!

YOU SHOULDN'T KEEP PARAKEETS AND COCKTAILS TOGETHER! http://petshub.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

hi Patty & hi Lovechick,
firstly ,Lovechick - why not?
And secondly, Patty sorry to have taken so long to get back to you.
what colour are the bits above the budgies beaks(cere)? If blue thay are both male, if brown then they are females...(if one is blue and the other is brown then they are one of each...LOL!!!)
it is not unknown for two of the same sex to be seen feeding and preening,(kissing and cuddling). This couldve been an introduction type of ritual from the two birds or possibly a way for them to sort out seniority between them.

As for keeping budgies and cockatiels together i see no wrong nor any harm from doing this as long as the cage is big enough to cater for the birds needs and there is plenty of room for them to excercise.

Please dont just breed the birds just for the sake of it,before you introduce a nestbox rehouse the cockatiel and ensure that you can find homes for any of the offspring from you pair ( if they are indeed a pair!)
One mistake a lot of owners make when breeding their pets is to think that their local petshop will take the young from their breedings, when infact a lot of petshops allready have a list of regular breeders who supply their stores with young animals and birds, so dont get caught out with that one and ask them first.

Hi Tappa,

Thank you so much for the info. Yes the cage is big enough for all the birds. And yeap...we have a boy and girl.
It seems that all this time when we thought that "HE" was being aggressive....its "SHE" that was being aggressive.
We have no plans to "mate" them. Thank you for the heads up about pet stores and I really don't want to get into raising baby birds. Can I still leave them together and not be nervous that I will come home to babies?
I really don't want to separate them...they look so cute together.

Thanks Again

Hi Patty,

yep, you can leave the two budgies together without the fear of tiny squawking nestlings....
