I've been breeding syrains far a while I've decided on getting some dwarves. I've done some research about it and im thinking of breeding dwarves. The place that I sell my syrains to will take dwarves from me.
Before I get them, I just wanted to make sure this info is correct..
Breeding pairs can be kept together in one large cage. The father will help the mother when the babies are born (keeping them warm while she eats/drinks, cleaning the pups) Too give the mother time in between her litters, seperate the male right after she has them; for she will go into heat right after birth.
Please reply asap.
Thanks,
Theresa

sounds about right... but you will need to seperate the male and female before the babies are born because they can and probably will mate immediately an hour or so later...

Dad will help alot with the litter, but will most likey get mum pregnant again at the same time. Its an awkward one.
If you separate them before birth, you wont be able to put dad back in until babies are weaned and removed from mum. If you put him in ealier it is likely than mum will attack him to protect the young, and also he may impregnante his daughters.

I suggest that you take the dad out before the mom gives birth because he may actually do more hurting than helping. He might smother the babies too much (sit in the nest with them for too long) and prevent the mother from feeding the babies with her milk. So the babies might starve to death. Also, he may eat them, bother the mother because she is paying so much attention to the babies and not to him (so the mom will stress out and eat the babies), and he WILL get her pregnant again. It's NOT good for a hamster to have back-to-back litters. Horrible on her health and the babies' health too.
Where are you getting your dwarves from, just any old pet shop? If you want to breed good tempered and healthy dwarf babies, as you know, it's best to get them from a professional breeder that knows the family history of the hamsters that they are breeding.

I just came home with them! They are beautiful. I've decided to name the girl Kichi and the boy Kuma ( I got the names off of another post :P ((But tell me if you mind ))
I got them at a family owned pet shop that we've been custamers of since i was little and we trust them completely. (I've never had a problem with anything I got from there)
They're in the cage now and no fighting yet, but i'll continue to watch for a bit longer.
I'll have pics soon!
Thanks,
Theresa

Sorry to be off topic, but I've been thining about breeding my syrian, well, after a while, and I wanted to know where you sell them? I live in Vancouver so if you have any good pet stores or buyers then I'd love to know.
BTW: After you are sure the mother dwarf is pregnant.

Actually I've decided not to name them that. Any suggestions would be Greatly appriciated!
Oh and the female is dark grey with dark red eyes and the male is soo pretty and hard to explain! But basically Greyish on the top with a kind of dirty looking stomache that kind and a dark stripe down his back. Does anyone know how to say beautiful in Jap. or BabyBoy and BabyGirl in Jap?

Em.. I don't mean to be a downer, but... You don't even know the colors of these hamsters and you are breeding them? I really think you should have done more research. I am not against breeding, but it really helps the breeder and the animals involved if the breeders know what is going on, you know what I mean? Check up on some sites and dif. forums, there's a lot to learn. ;)

PetLover, I sell the hamsters to the store for $4 but the Pet store sells them for $9. But i wish it was $4!!

Okay I see, I agree with Caitandcritters. You really should have done a lot more research.
I see where you are going with this Cait! ;)

well obviously what's done is done. Scolding people is not going to help. People come here for advise not to be harrassed after the fact.
Just be careful with breeding dwarfs certian patterns do not make good breeding pairs and should not be breed. for example do not breed two ruby-eyed-molted or you'll eny up 25% ohhh sooo sad eyeless toothless runts.

Do a google search for dwarf hamstery's many of them have extensive chart and pictures about dwarf genetics and piccking a good pair to breed

I was not scolding whatsoever. Its never too late to look things up. And I do not think anyone was harrassing the OP. I know its hard to read tones, but I seriously doubt any of those posts were meant to be read in a harsh tone because a) I know what tone I wrote my own post in and b) there wasnt anything to be harsh about.

Sorry to have jumped to conclusions but I've noticed on many of the forums here (not just Hamsters) time and time again people come here with questions. And some of the people here jump all down thier throats. Acting very rude and condescending to people who geuinely are trying to gain information. we should be glad people are asking anything and give the best advice we can without passing judgement. That's all

Yeah, I know how it is, don't worry. :) Sometimes this place is rather hostile, but I truly was not meaning to sound that way, really.
I think its neat that the OP is researching and all of that, its not a bad thing at all.

If the female is dark gray with red eyes, and the male is basically the same, they are NOT black eyed argentes.... What website did you find your information from? Seriously, a BLACK EYED argente would be a butterscotchy yellowish/brownish color, not gray and would have black eyes. And obviously, if one of them has red eyes, it CANNOT be a black eyed Argente. I would like to see the pictures of your hamsters when you get them, then we can all try to pitch in and tell you what colors they are! It seems to me that the male might be a mottled from the way you explained...
Look on this website and compare their colors to the colors on that website, see which color best fits your male and female colors: http://www.geocities.com/aaahamsters/Campbells.html
Here's what a black eyed argente looks like, notice how it's not gray and doesn't have red eyes:

Careful if they actually are molted. Ruby-eyed Molted often have black eyes and you can only tell they're ruby-eyed by shining a flashlight in thier eyes.

04-27-06, 12:37 PM 04-27-06
Yes, as bubblz said, when two ruby-eyed mottles are bred together, they create some eyeless and toothless completely white babies that die at a VERY young age, Which is heartbreaking!
So I truly hope that you got two different color types. :/ Please get the pictures SOON!
I love the picture of the Black Eyed Argente that I showed! That hamster is so adorable! :)

The ruby eyed gene can be hidden. Sometimes the have black eyes when you look at them. Do the flashlight test to be sure. It's a tricky thing you assume black eyes not ruby eyed but sometimes they are. Most molted in the U.S. actually carry the ruby eye gene regardless of the appearance of eye color.

And because of what Bubblz has pointed out it is best not to breed a mottled hamster to another mottled or albino, that way you can be sure you wont have any problems.
Albino can mask mottled.

ok...i did the flashlight test and the male Def. has black eyes. ANd they're not mottled.

I wasn't trying to be a pest. But if you ever saw the eyeless toothless whites first had you understand. So sad and completely preventable. Just want to help people not repeat mistakes.

ughh so i just found out that the camera's gunna be about a WEEK more!!But i really wanted to get things settled so i had some q's.
I would really! like to know what type exactly my BabyGirl and BabyBoy are.
BabyGirl's Completly dark grey (maybe a blueish color depending how you look at her)She has ruby eyes.
BabyBoy is a kinda beigish/sandy color on his stomache with a tad bit darker of the same color that's seperating his bottom color with his top color. His top color is a greyish/blueish/beige color. He has a darker stripe going down the middle of his back. He has Black eyes.
