im wanting to get a pet gerbil and i dont want to use a fish tank. so i was wondering about other ideas for a cage for them. i was looking at a wire cage for hamsters and gerbils that has a large bottom so bedding wont be kicked out. do you think that would be ok. it has space and the wheel is on the outside of the cage with an opening for them to get to it. also it has a hidding place for them to go to.

First of all, If you are going to get a gerbil, you are going to have to get 2, gerbils are very social and need to be kept in pairs. The best place to get a gerbil is a breeder - You can find a listing of breeders on www.agsgerbils.org

A tank is THE best thing to get. Why dont you want one? If you want to get what's best for the gerbils, get a tank. Plastic is bad for gerbils, and wire is no good, they will chew on it all day long. Why is it you don't want a tank?

Looked at the link and there are no breeders located in my state listed :(

What state do you live in?

I'm glad your getting 2 gerbils :) And good choice going with the tank! A tank is just as much fun as those other plastic critter-trails, as long as they have tons of toys! :D

I live in arkansas. Im going to have to figure out where to put a tank at. the thing with the cage is that i had a spot for it. I have no idea where to put a tank though. i was going to get just one gerbil but i keep hearing that they have to be kept in pairs. so i guess i will have to break down and spend another couple dollars and get another one. "oh darn...lol" If there is a type of cage that will work then let me know.

Gary another option is converted storage bin.
There are lots of examples but www.gerbilshowsuk.org in the DIY section has a good guide on making one.

Duna style cages (the ones with plastic bottoms and clear tops) work well too.

You can put a wire cage inside a larger fish tank (say a 20 gallon) as a playground. Or, use the 10 gallon tank wire cage topper.
