I bought a girlfriend for my lonely male dwarf ham ham about a month ago. They get along well, and it seemed like he was "pursuing" her for a while! but no babies! are theyjust platonic hammies? i find that hard to believe! Anything i can do?

Well, when you bought your hamsters, were they fixed? (Spayed or Neutured) If they were, that would prevent it.

I dont think its possible to spay or nueter hamsters, and if it is, i hardly doubt its worth it. Anyway, no they're not. I think the female may just be a little young. Shes just as big, but a young girl just the same. Also, the males fur is greasy looking. Where can i get some chinchilla dust or something , anything, for him. Its grossing me out he looks scroungy. will 2 opposite sex hamsters ever just not mate?

Oops, I was thinking about guinea pigs there :P Well, are you absolutely sure it's a boy and a girl? Because if you got them from a pet store then you could be wrong, because pet stores don't exactly know what gender the hamster is sometimes. Otherwise I have no clue.

What kind and type of hamsters are they? Some Syrian breeds, I know, have been overbred to the point a lot of the males may be sterile. A lot of the Satins are sterile, I've read. But still- you'd think they'd try, even if it didn't take...

hamsters can get neutered/ spayed, but its dangerous for the hammy and it costs alot of money. i dont think tehy do it unless theres somthin wrong down there/.

though they may have mated, matting is not always successful.. moreover, some female dwarf hamsters r able to withheld implantation

good luck though :D

If the female doesn't think the male is impressive, she'll reject mating, not wanting to pass on inferior genes to the next generation. It's the same thing as a male peacock not having a colorful wing spread or a robin's chest not being red enough. The females won't mate with a male they won't like. If the male is old and feeble, the female will not want to have children with him.

Yea, I bought both of mine fro a pet store and put them together so they can get to know each tohewr. Well the male was younger which was a problem cause usually the girls go after older guys lol but the first time they mated, nothing came, then the second time, she had one baby and it died and she didnt even eat it. I think mine are a bit too young though. Dwarves should be at least 4 months old right? My girl is 3 months and my boy is 2 months thas why oh well
