View Full Version : What breeds. . . (THIS IS NOT A DEBATE THREAD!)

Okay this is not a debate thread. I am not trying to to stir up trouble or cause hurt feelings or create full blown arguments. Chances are, this thread will be locked because of people being offended by badly phrased comments on their own opinions. Don't take offense to anything said here, I'm just curious. We have the "What breeds to you love" thread and now here is the opposite.
My question is:
What breeds DON'T you like and why?
Bad experiences, don't like their looks, NOTHING HATEFUL!!!
Again I don't want to cause problems by people coming and contradicting vehemently about what someone says, so if you will, just post your own and don't worry about the others.
Personally, I don't like arabs, tenessee walkers, or MO Foxtrotters.
I don't like arabs because every one I have been around or seen have been agressive and flighty. Granted they are beautiful horses, but I wouldn't want anything to do with them.
I don't like walkers because of their heads. Big ugly hammer shaped heads and thick necks. Not my kind of horse. I've heard great things about their temperaments though.
Foxtrotters, simply because I don't understand their gait. And the people I have known who have had them were the most idiotic individuals on the planet.
Remember. Mind your manners.

I really dont have any that I hate. I do think different breeds for different people. One of my faves tho is arab/ appy mix or arab/quarter mix. I know a lot of people scream about mixing but oh well. Depending on the breed chosen- cross bred arabs have all the beauty of the arab & the more stable temperment of the ....say...morgan or quarter or whoever.:D of course.. no offence to those who are pureists.

I do tend to shy away from high-strung breeds tho. I just dont enjoy spending time with someone whos eyerolling,& sidestepping every little shadow.

I adore arabs to look at, they are so beautiful... but to ride they feel a bit too skinny for me because i'm used to cobs. I cant think of a breed i dont like - they all have their merits.
I do agree with mokeybird though about trotters - I used to ride the most beautiful ex- trotter, he was stunning, but trying to get him into canter was a nightmare - he would just trot faster and faster with me boucing around on top looking my least elegant, with my teeth nearly being rattled out of my head.

I can't think of a specific breed that I hate, really. There are several I like to look at but would never own, and vice versa.
What I DO hate is what modern breeding has done to so many breeds (Arabians, Quarter Horses, Appys, Morgans, etc). These were always strong, functional horses. But the world of showing (particularly halter shows) has nearly ruined many of these breeds.
Arabs are not meant to look like starved giraffes.
Quarter Horses are not meant to be 16+ hands tall and built like Throughbreds (nor should they be 16hh, 1600 lbs, on size 00 shoes!).
Appaloosas are not meant to be built like Quarter Horses.
Morgans are not Saddlebreds.
THOSE are what I hate, but that's more hatred for the people who bred them to look that way.

I agree with RabbitMage 100%, there are too many "modernized" versions of different breeds out there. I like classic apperances, not all these fancy updated versions. Personaly, I don't like any gaited breed (with the exception of Paso Finos and Peruvian Pasos). I hate saddle seat, and I associate gaited breeds with saddle seat, therefore I don't care much for gaited breeds. I have ridden a few nice horses before, though. I use to ride a wonderful TWH when I took lessons and I use to show this beautiful Saddlebred mare, so I don't hate all of them. Actually I don't hate any of them, there are just a few that I dislike.

That is a really good point guys - my personal bug bear is exmoor ponies that have been specifically bred to have a smaller muzzle to look "pretty" for the showring....they are not true exmoors! They would not survive a winter on the moors and they certainly wouldn't survive another ice age.

AMEN RABBITMAGE!!!!!
Thats why I like cross bred horses (for pleasure) better. It seems to kick out some of the weaknesses turning up in the (new)purebreds.

of course It would be nice if we could start backbreeding to get back to how these horses are SUPPOSED to be.
You can still find true "cow pony" quarter horses but some of the other breeds are in danger of losing their real roots altogether.

I cant think of any type of horse that I dont like. But I agree with what has been said about the 'modern' purebreds. I wonder sometimes 'why cant people just treat horses like horses?'

i don't really hate any breeds but there are some more pretty to look at
i actually learned to ride on a really nice arabian
i hate more the people who train em, sell em and breed em.
like my friend bought a really nice halter horse (quater horse) and it was amazing looking but the seller gave us the wrong papers and she end up having immpressive breeding. she end up having a zeiure like thing while i was riding her... scary... but she had to be put down. we bought 3000$ green broke pretty horse that spooked at evrything only to put her down ... my friend got screwed because of the breeder/trainer being to stupid and breeding horse that your not allowed to breed. i hate horse taht are pretty but cant be used..

They are still breeding the Immpressive bloodline? That line turned over 10 years ago. I had an Immpressive bred colt almost 12 years ago (he was O.K.)& people were already having their horses tested to see if they carried the defect.
BTW...your friend can sue for what she paid for the horse & even file criminal charges for fraud & misrepresentation. I dont think something like that was an honest mistake.

They are still breeding Impressive bred horses. Even the ones who test N/H and H/H for HYPP. I thought the AQHA was going to do something about that, but I don't think anything's gone into action yet.

They said that 10 years ago too so they probably never will do anything about it.
