Hi. Just wondering if the cereal Honeycombs is an ok treat. She doesn't really seem to be interested in raisons or carrots.

They're really sugary. I wouldn't recommend it. LOL, even I wouldn't put that junk in my system. Try a healthier cereal like cheerios, with 1 gram of sugar per bowl.

Cheerios or Kix or plain corn flakes. These cereals have the least sugar on the market-only 1 gram per cup and it will take your hamster a long time to eat a whole cup of cereal.
If your hamster has a sweet tooth, feed them fruit. Apples, Pears, Peaches, Watermelons, Grapes- I have a complete list if you want it. But not seeds, remember. Some seeds contain trace amounts of arsenic. And nothing citric like oranges, pineapple, lemons, etc...

As far as sugar is concerned, I once tasted a small piece of hamster treat called "Yogurt Dips" (strawberry flavor). Turns out that it's pretty sweet. I have been feeding my du1 and du2 such treats for quite long, they just love the treats so much.
So, I think you can still give them those sweet cereals if they do love that. However, be limited on the amount. I would say, two or three flakes per day would be enough.
BTw, my hammies don't like cheerios at all. They love honey bunches of oats.

Yeah I can't imagine that the waxy comb is good for them either. too much could collect and block they system. ::nods:: cereal and fruits definatly sounds like the better treat

The stuff they honey is stored in on a honeycomb....the comb being the the hexagon shape in the honey'comb'.

you all are funny....hee hee! I needed a smile today...my hammy used to love little bits of carrot and grapes now and then, and he liked dried fruit too. I think there is plenty of sweetness in all of that stuff. He would eat half a raisin too. Never a whole one. Never found out why.

Half a raisin! Wierd! When I give CS baby carrots, I'll hold them really tight or she'll stuff the whole thing- she learned to bite them right next to my fingers- I don't know whether it is to break off the biggest chunk possible, or to try to spook me into letting go of it!

Feeding watery fruits to hamsters isnt good either, they can die from getting upset tummy from them. Solid veggies like carrots, broccoli, spinach and collard greens would be better for them.
I give my hamsters corn flakes sometimes just to watch them go nutz over it. They love really browned toast too - especially the crust. Dried pasta is great too.

Magnoliafly made a good point- lettuce and other leafy veggies should be given only occassionall they can cause diarrhea. Also brocolli, cabbage, brussel sprouts can cause upset tummies if given in more than the tiniest ammounts. Protiens and fiber fruits are best for them- nuts, cereals, seeds, apple, pear, etc. But not apple, pear, or grape seeds.
