My last gerbil died!!

Okay...they will die from mites if the owner, YOU, do not take it to the vet. Mites are very easy to treat..so this poor gerbil must have died a horrible death. i reccomend if you cannot afford vet care, or do not think small animals need a vet, then to not get another pet. Not trying to be rude or anything, when animals are ill they need to see a vet.. and obviously you didn't take your gerbil to one..they don't die from mites unless not treated for a long time.

Mites are easy to treat, he didn't have to die, but you let him. You didn't take responsibility. The life of this gerbil was in your hands, and you just let him die. That's a sad thing.

Normally, I don't react like this. But with something as small as mites, It's hard not to.

I hope you don't go and get another pet, and let it die too.

we were gone for a little bit, and i did not know that they had them, if i did i would take her with all the money i have! thats how much i loved her, and wene i came back it was to late! i would give all the money in the world to take her to the vet! but it was to late! how long were you gone? Cuz like everyone has said mites dont kill them right away. And was anyone watching your gerbil while you were gone? You can tell if they have mites by seeing thes little black flecks in the fur and if they are scratching alot. That how i found mites on my mouse paris.....2 times. I always check all my animals all the time to make sure. I'm sorry your gerbil died but next time be more careful. And if your gone have a friend or someone you trust take care of your animals and if they need a vet give them the vets number and yours. Again i am sorry for your loss but i think this could have been prevented.

Reptiles require alot of expert care. You have to maintain their temps and humidity..you need to make sure they get the correct diet, you need to give them a very good enviroment, they need a UVB bulb, etc... I like my box turtle, but she costs me more money, and requires more care than all my pets.

I really hope this person does NOT get a reptile, or any other animal for that matter.

i agree with you mel. Although i do have to say my 16 rats cost alot more then my ball python.....well counting all the vets costs, food, bedding, toys, treats ect... But my ball python cost more to buy lol. But it doesnt matter anyways. If this kid cant take her animals to the vet or if she just gets bored and decides she doesnt want them anymore thats just cruel and she should never be allowed any again, unless she learns to treat them better. It seems like theres more and more stupid people who dont think rodents need vet care or they figure they can just replace them. I'm sorry but if you can just "replace" a pet, you didnt care about them in the first place. I have had many rats in my time and never once "replaced" them. Even when i got new ones i never "replaced" them. Each rat, gerbil, hamster, mouse or anything is very dear to me and even if i got 50 of the same color and temperment that still cant replace the first one i had. I'm so angry...didnt i just go through this with my so called friend?????

You can't help gerbils, if your gerbil is dieing you can't do anything, if you don't know that is...and i loved her so there was no"geting sick of haveing her in this" if i was sick of her i would keep her till she dies. i am going to be a vet(i hope) and then we will see what happens..-pencil-

if a gerbil has mites you can stop it. if you catch it in time. And if you let her go all the time without a vet you would be able to see something was wrong before she even died and probably could have saved her. But what i dont understand is if you loved her so much like u claim why u wanted to get rid of her....and give her to your cousin? You should have done research on gerbils before getting them. And if you cant even do that with a gerbil, then you dont deserve a lizard. Reptiles are not cheap pets. I came here last march as a first ever gerbil owner. Besides doing a lot of research on them, I had never really known what gerbils were like. I bought my two girls from petco and 5 days later one of them died. It was a sudden death, probably tyzers. I had no idea what to do, so I came here. Everyone was very nice to me and I ended up meeting a breeder here and getting my second gerbil, and learning how to split-cage them. I used to come here whenever I had a problem or question. It was the best forum I found. When my own gerbils had mites and I didn't know what to do I came here and they told me all the symptoms and I went to the vet and got it treated. If it wasn't for this site who knows what would have happened. But now that has all changed. None of the old people I met when I first came are here, and I can understand why. If you look, most of the posts here end up in fights. Now I know that everyone is just trying to help, and I am not taking sides to this pertcular post, but I know that If I had a problem with one of my gerbils now, I probably would search for an answer somwhere else. I wish things were back like they used to be but they won't be until somone stands up and decides not to harrass (even if they did not do what was right) and just to be nice and try to help the person as much as possible. I decided not to post this as a new topic, because I think the board is allready cluttered enough with posts like these. I am not trying to be mean to anyone or anything, I just want this board to be back like it used to be. :tomato:

im only gonna say this once! I was being nice to you. But when i found out and i read the post about you getting rid of your gerbil and giving it to your cousin and then saying you wanted a lizard it concerned me. I'm not trying to be mean. Maybe you are just inexperienced i dunno. But i still say you could have helped your gerbil if you paid closer attention to her. Not saying you didnt care but sometimes people get carried away with life in general. And from experience with rats, mice, hamsters and gerbil, i found gerbils to be the hardiest. Meaning i to be honest really never had to take any of my gerbils to the vet. I use to breed i had over 46 gerbils at 1 time. They never had fleas, never had mites. Never even had wet tail. They are one of the healthiest rodents (out of rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils) out there i personally think. Maybe you were just inexperienced and need some help. But you need to keep an eye on any animal you have as a pet. And do tons of research. And yes vets can help gerbils too. We all tried to help but you seemed very irresponsible! We dont know you...remember that. And i highly suggest doing a ton of research on any animal you might get in the future!

I bought a nonprescription mite ridder for 5 dollars, and my gerbils were cured. And it takes at least a week for a gerb to die of "mits". WELL now here! what shall I say? Well I'll start out with this : Yelling at her about it will NOT help! The gerbil is dead, nothing anybody can do about it now. Its sad, and it could have been prevented, but its over.

Now, gerbilgirl, I want you to understand this. I'm not trying to be mean, but you dont seem to be understanding what they are saying to you. Mites takes a LOT longer than a weekend to kill an animal. Now I know you might not have NOTICED that your gerbil had mites, but it would have had it for alot longer than a weekend for it to die. If you would have payed a WEE bit more attention you might have noticed them, and could have solved the problem with no hassle. Now like I said, theres nothing you can do about it NOW, but maybe next time you consider getting an animal, pay a WEE bit more attention to it. ESPECIALY if its a reptile. If you had problems taking care of a rodent, a reptile may be a BIT much for you to handle. Reptiles, of ANY kind, take a LOT of care and attention, and they are usualy very EXPENCIVE. Think about it and do your reserch before getting any more animals, whether it be a lizard or whatever.
