a question....are all wheels noisy when a hamster is running in them? I used to have to put my hammies in the closet at night when I had them in my room just so I could sleep, they were so noisy in their dang wheels. Our latest hamster stayed down in the living room all the time, on top of the entertainment center (away from little fingers) so it was not a problem but I told Jasmine she could get a hamster after we get back from our vacation this summer, and she wants to keep it in her room. I am assuming this hamster - to - be will also have a noisy wheel and I don't want it keeping her up at night (and there is NO room in that girl's closet!!) Any ideas? Or is it just destined to be another living room dweller? We have a habitrail and the wheel is plastic and it makes no noise at all when I spin it but for some reason it gets real noisy (chunka chunka chunka) when someone is actually running in it. Just looking for ideas here.

I had that problem for a long time...Mr.Keats wheel is one of the outside of the cage, pure plastic and very loud. I tried shutting the door but he started to try and chew through it and that was even louder. So my suggestion is just let them have it....if it is an wheel on the inside of the cage, just take it out before you go to bed.

Oh no!!! I couldn't do that, wheel-running is their favorite thing to do at night and what else would he do with all that time on his hands? He most surely would chew the bars or something. I think it would be best to let him sleep in the living room at night and Jasmine can take him in her room during the day. I was just kinda hoping there was a solution someone had found like "Oh just spray it with PAM" or something, ha ha!

Is the wheel made of wire/metal. When I had a hamster that would happen to their wheel, it would creak everytime they gave it a spin. Not the best thing when you're trying to sleep! My dad would but a little oil on the wheel where it was squeaking and the sound subsided for a few weeks. I know it didn't harm my hamster he lived 4 years!

You're supposed to be able to grease the spindle with vaseline, but I have no idea how to get it open to do that. CS's outside wheel is a lot quieter than the one she used to have inside- it made the whole cage rattle- now it's just a whirring sound- liveable. But mainly because the spindle is right over her back and she's so fat she can't go as fast as in the open faced one. She doesn't care, though, as long as she gets to run- plus she has plenty of ball-time.

i have the same problem with ozzie. no matter what i did it still make taht noise. plus he runs REALLY fast(he won 2nd in teh hamster race! he would have won first if he dint stop to sniff around), so it really made alot of noise. i put him in the bathroom at night, before i moved him downstairs(not for the noise my sister threw shavings all over when she was takin him out.)

I just use vasaline, you can use cooking oil too but I'd be careful with that. Get a q-tip and if you've got a regular wire wheel you can squeeze the spindles towards the middle of the wheel and it should pop out enough to greaze the groove where the wheel sits. Give it a good rub all around and on the inside of the hole where the spindle sits and put it back on. It should be really silent for many many months and it wont hurt hammy.

If you've got a plastic wheel just see where the wheel connects to the holder and spread it around. If you can pop the wheel off the holder it works better since you can get all in there.

Now CS has started unstuffing in her wheel, which is the closed outside kind, so when she runs, it sounds like some kind of voodoo rattle- it is really loud! The first time she did it- it spooked the pee out of me! Waking me up with this CHinkata-chinkata-chinkata! Why does she want all that stuff flying around in there, hitting her in the head when she runs? Do they just LIKE to make noise?

i had one that squeeked too, it drove me crazy!

i just put a little conola oil (pam or something like it), on the axis where the wheel and the holder thing came together.

its makes no noise, but you gotta put some new cooking oil every week or so.

i dont know if that helped, but i hope it did! :D

You guys are so lucky you have pet carnivals and stuff! I don't think there is anything where I live, in Northern Virigina, well for small animals atleast :(

This is new for us- the pest store is family-owned and their daughter, Sarah, is a friend of mine- she's always coming up with fun things to do- like the Valentine's art contest I came in second a few months ago.

Now CS has decided to make her bed in the wheel! AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!! I woke up this morning and she had all but packed it with aspen and paper towel pieces, slumbering away! SHould I just let her do it? Or take it off for now? THere's not enough room inside to put the other wheel back in, or I'd do that! What to do?

Really? I guess it's okay, then. Just wierd she made it in her wheel when that's her favorite place to run. Like she didn't really think it through very well! LOL!

Well, I tried an experiment and it worked- I put some new paper towels up in her old nest and she decided it was better after all. So now we're back to unstuffing in the wheel and kerplickity-plickity-plickity all night long when she runs! UGH! I should have left ehr alone!
