What are the purpose of whikers

What is the purpose of whiskers. They seem to do nothing. Not just on like cats, but also on rodents

I think whiskers are for sensing, something like that anyway!

For cats, i have heard that it tells them how big (fat) they are so they don't get stuck in places. Like they won't try to squeeze into places that they sense is too small for them. But that is just what i have heard.
