My nephew (he's 22) has decided to keep the filly born to one of my mom's horses. She's not weaned yet but he wanted me to research her feeding requirements for after weaning.

Can you guys give me some info or point me to a site or book I can send him?

Purina makes a great intermediate horse feed, really depends on whats available, what she's doing, and how much grass she gets. Many feed companies make feed for "growing" horses. I dont know of any books-the best person to talk to is your feed guy, if hes reliable

Hi,
www.robinsons-uk.com is an online store that has a lot of good horse books in specialist areas.

Many companies make feeds for growing horses. Along with that she will need good qaulity hay. Before you wean them you should start introducing them to grain.

He lives in Wyoming so she will be grazing. I will send him to the feed store in town so they can point him in the right direction and possibly out to the vet.

As for starting her on grain...just regular grain? Start offering it to her to see if she's interested?

Depends on what she is doing. Many companies now make grains based on age and activity level of the horse. Some hard to keep horses do better with sweet feed, others are fine on pellets. All depends on the horse and how much activity level. My big horse got 3 scoops of sweet feed x2 a day, plus as much denge as he would eat, because he was a "hard keeper". I know Purina makes a great feed for the various age brackets-weanling, yearling, and so forth.
