Voyager is a my foster dog, a GSD mix of nearly a year. Faith is my beagle mix, and is 8.
They had been getting along mostly well, Faith clearly being the dominant dog, until today. Voyager had a toy, and when Faith walked by him, he snarled and snap at her, she growled back, and then they started fighting. He bit her on the muzzle and made her bleed.
I don't know what to do - Is it my responsibility to try and make them get along? Do you think I can trade him back to the shelter for a different foster?

Hi there,
Personally I dont think it is fair to return Voyager to the shelter. But you know best the circumstances.

Dogs do fight. Of course you have to be involved 100% in the process of educating your dogs but also, they have their own way of establishing hierarchy. Maybe that was what happened when they fought. Keep an eye on them. Most of the times these things got sorted out “dog like”. It is very possible that Faith understood the warning and from now one thing can go OK. But in any case do not give up Voyager. It isn’t easy but hey, since when it did suppose to be easy.
He deserves one more chance. Give this chance to him. Watch them as close as you can . And if, in the future you see Voyager having behavioral problems maybe then you can consider other options too. Good luck.

While I agree that it would suck to take him back to the shelter with the reason of he bit your dog, he may just be a dog that needs to be in a single dog home. If things can work out in your home with him, that would be wonderful, but your responsibility goes first to YOUR dog. If having this specific, or any, foster dog in your home is going to endanger your own dog, you shouldn't do it.

Upon closer examination, I was relieved to find that he just bashed his head into hers, which made her bite the corner of her tongue, which she then used to lick her face, which created the appearance of a scary gash on her nose. So, everything appears to be well - thank you anyways!
