I have a 3-4 year old that is part app. and something else forgot.HE is a stud. I use a straight bit for him. I just started using it. Is this bit ok for him. He is doing pretty good with it, and he doesnt act as stubborn as he use to.

My brother brought a 6-9 year old horse and he is very shy and jumpe. He was abused before. I have rode him once. I got throw ,but he is a great horse he neck reins, goes and stops good. he is just jumpe. If i spent time with him alot would they calm him down? Is a broke bit or a straight bit better? He hates being bumped with the stirrups that is how i got throw.

Hi,

Straight mouth bits tend to be milder than jointed because they do not have that "nutcracker" action. If he's going well in it then I would say stick with it. If it aint broke don't fix it!

Sorry to hear about your brother's horse being abused - so sad.
I'm sure that with a bit of t.l.c and calm and gentle handling he'll be fine.
Good Luck!

I personally think that straight bits are more severe than jointed ones usually (there is always an exception to the rule). I believe that jointed bits are more comfortable for a horse in general. Straight bars put more pressure on the corners of a horse's mouth, bars and tounge even when there is no pressure on the reins, then jointed bits. As for the nutcracker action of a jointed peice, that is true, but that action only makes a differance to the horse if the bit is used extremlly harshly, with a downward pull. Try it some time, with your own hands and someone acting as a rider. I agree with Lonestar, though. If it ain't broke dont fix it. Maybe a straight bit is what he needed-he is a stud! lol! As for the abused horse, I suggest that you use a plain eggbutt snaffle at first, and g from there. Time, patience, love yet firmness, and gentleness will heal him. Good luck, and keep us posted!
