Ello people,

Exactly 16 days ago my 2 hamsters mated, The next 4 days passed and from then to now I have not seen them mate since! Making me think that My hamster was pregnant.

Around day 9-10 Chloe looked real big, huge on her back and rear, ate loads of food, made a huge nest, which the male helped her make, and she also became a little more vicious when I try to pick her up. Though OK then shes pregnant, took the male out and waited a while.

About 3 days later (day 13) the size of her decreased, she no longer had a huge lump, but still ate quite a bit and kept making her nest/being vicious, yesterday (day 15) I moved her into a bigger cage, she settled down fine, I made her a little nest, now, woke up today, she is quite big, is eating a fair bit more than she usually does, still as vicious, continues making her huge nest and sleeping alot, shes even brought her food stick into her bed where shes been muching on n off for about an hour.

Im not sure, but I think there are babies inside her cos When shes walking, or eating you can see a few little kicks and that inside her. (Not totally sure on that though)

So what do you guys think, is she pregnant or is it just a phantom pregnancy?

Plus if she is going to give birth today will it be in the night, cos shes been sleeping a hell of a lot lately, only awake maximum of 2-3 hours a night.

What type of ham is she? I'm guessing Syrian because you're remarking on 16 days, where as dwarves take a bit longer.

I would give her another couple of days before assuming it's a phantom pregnancy, though. Some hams have been known to "hold in" thier pregnancy a bit longer.

If they are syrians, please say you are NOT keeping the male and female in together?

She does sound pregnant though, i have spoken to several vets and breeders and phantom pregnancies aren't that common. What is more common is for them to be pregnant but to reabsorb the babies if they dont think their cage is a safe place to have their babies (e.g. the male is still there)

Reabsorbing is different from pseudopregnancy as the babies are actually there. Despite this i have had 2 pseudopregnancies in as many years.

Just had a check up on her, her rear looks long now and looks to me like the babies will be out soon, But, I can't see anything moving around, apart from her normal breathing, is this normal, or is there meant to be wriggling around inside?!

It sounds like babies are coming, generally the first mating is successful in a litter but all you can do is wait and see.

I really hope she isn't over 1 year old, after that the females hips fuse together and it makes it almost impossible for her to have babies, it will most likely cause her death.

It normally happens between 16-21 days but my hamster has held off to 23 days before. It depends if she feels secure giving birth.
