i know that there is a lot of confusion when it comes to gliders in PA...but i know of several people in PA who own them, and i have a couple of vets near by that treat sugar gliders. :) if anyone has a pair of sugar gliders (dosn't matter what sex), i'd be interested.
thanks! :innocent:

You should read this post http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=555776&an=0&page=0#Post555776If you are found out, the gliders could be put down. I would recommend looking into another pet.

Yeah yeah we have all herd it before. I have said this a million times before... if your not showing off your gliders to everyone everyday then you will be fine. I know about the stories and everything else, whatever, it doesnt happen very often unless you are showing them off like an idiot!

The girl that had to get rid of her babies was not "showing them off like an idiot". Your response shows that you are immature and selfish. You care more about yourself than animals. Anyone that would sell to you is insane!

Well...the Reality is that Most people who live in PA know of the fact that they are illegal to own, buy, breed, import, or export. Fact is that the people who are willing to seek out and purchase gliders anyway do so because they are willing to knowingly break the law and potentially jeopardize the suggies. I am certain there are several GOOD vets that will treat suggies there...I would imagine this is more of an ethical issue than an legal issue, as most doctors are Ethically obligated to treat the sick. What has not been posted is that a Vet by law is then obligated to inform the proper authorities...not that they all DO...but they CAN and are SUPPOSED TO...which means that each time you take a suggie to a vet, you could not only loose it forever, but also suffer legal consequences as well. In addition...I do not know of any breeder willing to knowingly sell to anyone in PA. If a USDA Breeder sells to an illegal state, that breeder could quite possibly loose thier license permanently. Most breeders will not take that chance. I believe that if true animal wellfare is kept in mind, that people in illegal states should simply find a more suitable pet that is legal to own in their home area. This isn't a matter of showing off or acting like an idiot...I have heard stories of suggies being taken from people who do not take them out in public...no One knows HOW these people were found out...but they were. Why Risk It? No one seems to be able to justifiably answer that one simple question...WHY RISK IT? "Because they're cute and fuzzy" doesn't quite cut it when you consider $5000 and up Fines...AND having the animal put to sleep because of it's owners selfish desire to own an illegal pet...

that whole post sounds a lot selfish to me, instead of yourself think of the animals, if you got caught they would be put down. Use your head.

i haven't been able to get to a computer for a while because i was in Florida attending a funeral. sorry guys, it was actually my friend who wanted sugar gliders but she is not a member so i she posted on my name. anyway...i did tell her that they are illegal and it wouldn't be a good idea to be looking for one. i let her read the posts and she decided it isn't the best idea for her or the animals to take the risk...
thanks..

I thought I read somewhere that they are legal but only under some conditions...

PA law states that exotic animals are forbiden in state lines. Now why we are still able to have ferrets is a wonder to me. But yeah MANY people are trying to change the laws to permit suggies. Its a difficult process as the law is very complicated itself. It used to be that PA could sell and buy within state lines but it has changed over the years.
Show your love for PA and send an email to Mr. Arlen Specter.

Why are they illegal?

Now that I just dont know. I inderstand why they are illegal in CA... eating crops... destroying plants... etc. But in PA they wouldnt survive the winter months. That is a question that I have been searching for the answer to.

Canada doesnt have any regulations for any animals, all animals are legal here to my knowledge. I get so sad hearing about the US banning certain animals from a state. It's just not right, there are so many animals in need out there.

Most animals banned from specific states are exotics. They are banned because if they were released or if they escaped there they could survive and affect the ecosystem, perhaps killing off already-existent plant or animal species. Either that or they could be harmful to everyone that interacts with the animal (if it were a crocodile or something). So yeah.
But as 2SugaKids pointed out, it doesn't make sense for PA because suggies can't last the winter there...same with hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs are banned in PA?!?!?

Unfortunately, yes. It's a little bit weird. As this site says:
http://pgchallofshame.com/stories/page4.htm
" I contacted our Game Commission and was advised that hedgehogs were legal to own and sell in PA, but illegal to import into the state. I was also advised that there were no permits nor licenses required. I repeatedly called PGC over the years and checked on the internet for any regulation changes."
"They feel that since hedgehogs are not native to PA, any offspring hedgehogs in PA are now considered "offspring of initially illegally imported hedgehogs." This, despite that hedgehogs have been in PA for 15 years and that I was told previously that any already here were "grandfathered in"."
So it's sort of silly. That was a few years ago, but now I think that most exotics are illegal (completely).

See this site- it says everywhere hedgehogs are illegal, including PA.
