Here is something I quite frankly don't get.
I saw one lady on T.V. that had two Syrians in one cage.
They were adults...
I thought Syrians were solitary.
If you keep two Syrians together from birth on... Can they stay together?
Just curious.

The woman on tv is an idiot. Put simply... once in a blue moon it *can* happen with littermates but the chances are so very VERY slim it isnt worth risking the hamsters life to find out is it?
Plus.. can you imagine the size of the cage you would need??? Syrians need a lot of space..

Okie Dokie! Thanks Moo.
I figured she was an idiot.
Just wandered what the hay was going on!
I would NEVER attempt it.

I had 2 syrian hammies that were litter mates that stayed together, they'd cuddle together and sleep. Sadly they both passed away long ago now. I got them thru the SPCA.

Before my mom knew syrians were solitary, I was young and we didn't have the internet..she kept our syrians together. We had alot of syrian hamsters back then...They did fine together, they seemed happy and there were no fights..that I can remember.
Also earlier this year I had 4 hamsters from a rescue.. 2 males had been living together for two years, and were perfectly fine..but I took everyones advise here and seperated them..and they did seem much happier alone.

Yea, it's pretty slim that Syrians will get along, I wouldn't want to risk it though.

When I was younger I remember a friend of mine and his siter got a syrian each. They had this huge elobrate setup and I rememeber like a week later one lost an eye and was pretty mangled by the other.
& when I was in grammar school we had them in a class one day in the morning we were looking in the cage and only saw one. (Turned out it wsa a female who'd had a huge litter the night before) The food bowl was upside down and the teacher found the male under the dish dead.
It was wierd no still ever really told us two as a rule can not live together. I learned that years later when I got Quimby & went crazy with the books and computer research

It's just too risky. The number of cases where one or both hamsters have been injured or killed far outweigh the number of cases where they have lived together harmoniously.
As a rule, don't even try it. It's not worth the risk, and the inevitable trauma of waking up one morning to find your hamsters dead.
They're perfectly happy alone, pottering around doing their own thing :)

I agree, it is too risky and just because people werent to brilliant and put them together, they are happy alone, they arent sad, they don't want to make friends, they just want to enjoy their time and space ALONE. I wouldn't dare jepordize my hamsters lives by putting 2 syrians together for a long period of time. I did have them together for a short period of time (10 mins) for breeidng purposes. that's the only catch in my sesntence.

Still Confused about what exactly?
Some can get along, and probaly most likely they will but i would risk any situation!
I have never had 2 syrians together as i knew from a young age that they didnt go together before i entered the world of Dwarfs(LOL)
The nearest mine got to each other was their cages next to each other as i think they kept each other company!

No I get it.
It's just some people say one thing and others another.
I would NEVER risk it.

IF the two are litter mates, IF the two have NEVER been separated, then it is quite possible to keep them together. If one escapes from the cage, and it is not found within a short period (about 12-24 hours), the two cannot be put back together.
There is no need for name calling. As I am one of those "born idiots", who is not a child, and who has quite a bit of animal experience, I take offense to your statement since I have successfully kept them together.

A lot of people have kept them together and I don't care if you take offense, in rare occasions they will stay together but they prefer there own space. Saying oh I've done it just means other people will want to try it and they can die or be seriously hurt if they do. I don't care how much experience you have had with them, every vet and person who knows about syrians hamsters will tell you it's a big no-no.

I don't mean to be rude at all. I mean, fair enough that you say you have successfully kept Syrians together, but I don't understand why you would continue to keep them together knowing that one day you could find them dead.
Whether they have lived together for 10 weeks or 10 months, because they are naturally solitary, just one squabble could lead to death.
So everything could be fine for a long time, until one day something terrible happens and it's like "But they were fine yesterday!"
I just wouldn't want people to find out the hard way :(

Well, I would never purposly put two syrians together..I got them from a rescue where they have lived together for 2 years in the same cage. They did perfectly fine...but I seperated them anyway.

exactly Punky. They like being on their own and having their own space. Why would anyone try risking their lives to just pair them up.

it's pretty simple some people do dumb things get lucky and want some kind of prize for it.
