Hello,
i might need to take my hamster on a plane ride soon, and i was wondering, would he be ok on a plane ride? its a four hour flight, and I was planning on buying him (his name is kirby), i was planning on buying kirby a lee's critter keeper thing just for the plane ride. O yea, he's a dwarf hamster, just if you're wondering, and I've had him for about a year and a couple months now. would someone please tell me if the plane thing is not such a good idea?
thanks in advance

I don't know about the plane ride, but if the Lee's critter keeper is one of the plastic ones- I have one like that that I quit using becuase CS got so hot in it one day we had to stop at a conveinience store and buy her water. She was pathetic. You can buy wire-sided ones for about the same price.

I don't see what the plane ride would hurt. Be sure to include a wood stick for him to bite on to relieve ear pressure. Other than that, I don't see it much different than a car ride. Noisier, maybe- the airport and the jet engines and all, and he might me a little frantic, but I'm sure you know how to calm Kirby as long as you;ve had him.

i dont think tehres anything wrong with taking him for a plane ride.just make sure teh airport will let you. phone ahead just to make sure. my cousin wasent allowed to take her mouse back with her to b.c, but on the way there, she had brought it.

Call the airline in advance before you plan this trip. Some airlines won't allow you to bring live animals onto the cabin, some only allow them in the cargo area, some only allow CERTAIN animals and not others. You might need to have your vet check your hamster and give you a health certificate too.

thats what i was worried about in the first place lol, my friends where like what if he blows up? Like for instance you know when on a plane ride and your ears start popping and you feel lots of pressure, thats gotta be a million times worse for an animal a hundreth of your size! I guess I'll be sure to put lotsa food in so he can keep chewing

I guess the best thing to is to ask your vet- I don't think his head is going to explode- if you consider that the pressure in his head would have to be proportional becuase of his size. I don't doubt it would be uncomfortable, but little pets travel by plane all the time- my dad had a job when he was in college transporting exotics from the airport to their new owners- sugargliders, marmosets- all kinds of little guys- most of the time they were just freaked from being jostled around so much- and they had made the trip alone and not in the lap of their usual person of comfort. The main problem would be if they didn't let you board with him. You should check with the airline about that.
