hmm, I never thought of getting insurance for my pets... I guess that would be kinda expensive, but I will definitely get one, when I get a horse, cause thats big.

I want one, but its all really a matter of time and money, it all depends if i'll get a job I might be able to get a horse, but I'm afraid its not that easy, so I'm thinking of leasing a horse first, its much cheaper and you get to taste of ownership without the full commintment. And yes I will definitely post a picture when I will have equine of my own...lol:D

oh i missed your cost question...lol
horses can cost anywhere from $500-20,000(race horses) but I would have to say for general riding somewhere between $1,500-3,000 plus theres a whole bunch of other things the horse will need food, shelter, bedding, blankets, grooming supplies, vet visits, vaccinations, deworming, tack, and the list in never ending, and also MagnoliaFly told me it can all add up to be $20,000 a year. But the numbers can be lowered if u know how to save money, like u can get bedding for free(wooden shavings) and we have a friend whos a vet, who will do vaccinations and other vet related things for free, so it all depends..:D

Insurance for horses is around $150 a year. Not too expensive, and I believe thats for insuring a $5,000 horse. The main cost is vetting, feed, board, farrier fees and training.
Lovechick your right, you can order the products yourself and administer the vaccinations once a vet shows you how. That can cut the cost down a little bit. I hear worming is fun, I never got to experience that though.

well I dont know if worming is fun lol, doesent seem like it though, cause most of the horses hate when people mess with their mouths, I think a better choice would be to buy deworming medicine in form of pellets, and then mix it with sweetfeed, the only downside to that is that some horses can smell the medicine and wont touch it.. :agree:

I meant the worming comment sarcastically :)
Most medicines mixed into sweetfeed dont get eaten I've found. Its better to syringe it into the mouth if its liquid or powder.

VPI is the only place that offers pet insurance for ferrets right now and they don't cover surgeries for endocrine diseases (e.g. adrenal and insulinoma), so you may want to do a cost analysis on if it's worth it or not. You might be better off putting money aside in a medical fund for your kid.

Mary is right!!! It does not cover Adreanal of Insulinoma! Also, you have to come up with the money for the vet upfront, and they reimburse you. It also does not cover routine exams and shots! I put at least $20/week away for my ferret fund (I have 4). It adds up quick and you're not paying ins. $ to someone that won't even cover the "biggies"!
I have 2 horses. Both were bought for $300 each!!! Lucked out on that though...in the right place at the right time! But the costs associated with owning a horse can be staggering!!!! Money is put aside in a fund for them as well!!!! LOL!

thats great price, if thats what youre looking for, I heard to many horror stories of people buying horses just cause theyre cheap, turns out they were drugged and have horrible personality, I thought it would be nice to adopt a horse, but theres only 1 horse rescue in NC that I know of, and they only have horses that are too old, sick and cant be ridden, or very difficult horses that require expert handling. Maybe later in life I will be more advanced to adopt a horse, so I can work with it.:agree:
Ok this is turning into horsey post, but I love them dearly! I had my lesson yesterday, it was really fun, and I wish I could spend my entire life with horses.lol

Cheap wasn't the reason we bought them. We had wanted them for awhile and already knew them both! We just caught the owners at the right time to get a great price!

Its pretty cheap too, you can either do it monthly or annual. And they give you multi pet discounts.
