They are both babies, and they're completely tamed. They never bit me once, and everyone who worked at the petstore said that they were socialized like all the time.
They cost $30 together though... but I don't care. :D
They are both females, one is mottled and the other is the wild type. The mottled one has a big nose and huge eyes while the wild type has small eyes (don't pop of out the head!) and a cute little face.
The closest thing to a bite was a lick on the finger. :)
I'll get pictures up awfully soon.

$30 for two dwarfs is a good deal.
You may want to double check on their sex. Pet stores notoriously make mistakes.
I know tia and I think Moosley have good pics for sexing hammies. I don't have any diagrams off hand. Or you can doa google sreach for sexing dwarf hamsters.
Can't wait to see yor pics.
Good luck

Right now, they're both taking their naps.
Yeah, I think the girl at Petland wasn't too sure about their sexes. My mom said if they have babies we can give them away and my sister will take one.
They were running all around the place, but now they just want to sleep. ;)
Though... my sister bought a pregnant albino guinea pig. The animals were in mixed gender cages... so these hammies I have could possibly be both pregnant!! And they're babies!

Here I have a diagram, Moosley's are of a actual hamster so it might be way easier to see, but here is mine.

I'm so sorry, but I did return the other hamster. She didn't like me, and I didn't like her very much. She bit me *all* the time. I'm not a hamster expert (more of a novice), so I want hamsters who are already tame (even though I will have to work hard to keep them that way). I mean, that doesn't mean I don't know anything about them, I certainly know the basics.
I've owned one Syrian before, and I got him as a baby from Petland many years ago (he's still alive, but only has about 3 months left until he's 3 years old). His name is Chi and he's never ever bitten me before.
I would have still bought the baby hamsters I currently have even if they were adults. I just wanted tame hamsters who were friendly.
But... the lady at Petland sexed them wrong!! I got one male and one female I believe! Eep.

I think it wasn't very responsible as a pet owner to return your hamster but I also see your point as you are novice and didn't want to deal with an aggressive hamster. It takes a lot of work no matter babies or adults. I just hope if these ones start biting you don't return them.

I don't think these babies will bite me. If they did, I wouldn't return them because I know it will be possible to tame them again, because I'm thinking that it would be a bit easier to tame them again than to tame a fully grown hamster that's probably spent a total of 10 seconds in a humans hands its whole entire life (equivalent to hugging a squirrel to me).
These little hammies are very patient and well tamed. Even after waking them up by accident to give them some medicine (small dosage of Dri-tail to prevent wet tail), they didn't bite me when I held them. I don't even think they know that biting is even possible! lol

Hey! You said they would bite me if I put my face up to them!!
Tia Mari I will make sure she keeps them or else I will take them no matter what. I have her other hamster Chi. He is such a sweety.

if they are different sexes then SEPERATE them!
and if you did research before owning hamsters or bothered reading my post, you would know that dwarf hamsters dont get wet tail and "dri-tail" is a bad product.

Dwarf hamsters don't get wet tail so feeding them dri tail is just silly. You are giving them medication they don't need, if the pet store suggested this to you they are idiots. If you want to take good care of them geta vitamin suppliment for your water and keep them well fed, a clean cage, a constant supply of fresh water and they are very active, so make sure you have a wheel. Stop giving them dri-tail.

And yes, unless you want a million babies, seperate them immediately, at 8 weeks they hit maturity and will begin to breed and chances are they are brother and sister and will have a bunch of genetic defect babies.

Well, I feel very bad for your first dwarf hamster. You shouldn't have returned it. You should have worked with it (even with gloves on) and tried to tame it and once it stopped biting, you would have felt so proud of yourself for working with an "impossible" hamster.
I don't know why you aren't separating the dwarves.... You have 8 extra cages. I know that it stinks that you thought they were the same and that they would be able to live with eachother for a long time, but you need to separate them, unless you want about 6 babies every 21 days or so. :(
Plus, as Moo and Tia have said, dwarves don't get wet tail, therefore dri-tail is uneeded and probably will make the hamster ill.

Yes You NEED to seprate them NOW. Are there 8 weeks old now? They may just be. I hope not! But as soon as you read these posts sperate them immediatly! And i havent/currently own dwarfs but i know they can't get wet tail...and i'v also heard that dri-tail its a bad product or something along thoes lines. But im not certin. Hope all goes well.

Oh, well I bought vitamins anyway for their water, and I will separate them now. The problem is about 8 cages, is that I don't have enough supplies (water bottles, food dishes, etc.) for all of them. I'll have to run by the petstore very quickly.
The babies don't look 8 weeks... they are very tiny.
Is it normal for babies to sleep like, all the time?
They don't have any diahorea, but they are sleepy little guys. They like to run around when I wake them up, though, and I didn't see them running around yesterday evening. They don't look weak though.

Ummm, yes, hamsters are nocturnal and sleep during the day.
Opie's awake hours are from like 10:00pm-7:00am.

Hey try not to wake them up. Let them wake up on their own.

Well, I only had to wake them up to give them snacks (which they glady accepted), because I've noticed that they aren't eating their food.
I know that hamsters sleep during the day, but they also sleep during the night as far as I can see!

If you wake them up regularly it's bad for their health and may even cause a shorter life span. Also if you wake them up they may get agressive and bite you
PetLuver21257
07-01-06, 07:33 PM 07-01-06
Yes, they sleep during the night if they want. Yeah, don't wake them up, it does shorten their life span! :(

07-01-06, 09:29 PM 07-01-06
Ok, but do you know why they sleep 24/7?
I drop food into their little hut thing (has big air holes), and they gladly accept that, since I've heard munching occassionally, and that one time I woke them up, I saw Spot chewing on a sunflower seed I gave him a few hours earlier.
They only come out when they hear me coming into the room sometimes, or when they want to get water...

Lol.
Well last night, I bought them a new wheel. They enjoyed it much better than the previous one (Silent Spinner, it belonged to a mouse earlier and they couldn't make it spin).
These little hamsters are hilarious! They like to play a game on the wheel; jump on and off the wheel, both together at the same time while it's spinning, and they do it really fast! They woke me up 3 in the morning and I thought it was so cute.

WHY AREN'T YOU SEPARATING THEM!? They are male and female right?!
You sound like you purposely WANT baby hamsters you know? Seriously, separate them, didn't you say that you got all the supplies for another cage set-up like yesterday?! :(

They are babies yet if you would of read his post, they havent hit maturity yet. They are fine for a few more weeks.

Yeah, I'm deciding to let them stay together *just* for a few more days. I mean, I did buy the the supplies, a new wheel, and stuff, but they are too small to have babies of their own. I'm guessing they are only 20-28 days old.

awwwww they sound sooooo cute!!!! its sooooo sad u have to seprate them. Cant ya neuter them or sommet?? (sorry i dont know about that too much so please explain the risks, which i think there are...) thanks!

Well, I feel very bad for your first dwarf hamster. You shouldn't have returned it.
PL - I dont know how you dare say that......
With regards to breeding, dont wait a few days as you 'think' they are 20-28 days. Split them now. I have had hamster breed at 28 days - wasnt planned I assure you. All my males get separated at 28 days, and since you are only guessing age, I would split them asap.

PEtluver, you don't know any of that for fact because you never owned that ham, it's sad her or she got returned but it just was too wild for a novice to tame.

this coming from PL who returned a poor dwarf because it needed a tooth trimming and it didn't turn out to be what she expected (i.e. as active and young as she had originally wanted). ahem.

Now now..it's not to time to be at peoples throats, just remember you all were novice at one point and to treat people with respect and understanding.
