Do the bite/nip you a lot? I've noticed that every red-eyed Gerbil/Hamster I've had has never bitten me and always seem to be the nicer ones.

Nope, but that sounds interesting.
It could be just because you are a good owner! :D
I have a syrian hamster with red eyes who is really nice and has never bitten me before either.

When i first got my red eyed syrian she held onto my finger..teeth went right through each side and she couldn't get her mouth open enough to let me go so well i was bleeding everywhere I had to gently open her mouth and get her to release my finger. It hurt a lot but it never discouraged me from hand taming her. Now she has perfect never bit me since.

I've had both red eyed and black eyed of syrians and campell's honestly I've never noticed a general difference in temperment in either breed

Same here. a few months ago I lost the last of my dark eared white syrians. THey came from a bad background, and I got them as adults...and they were extremely friendly towards me, and never bit me once. On the other hand, I had a little cambells dwarf family (not albinos, I forgot what colors though) and they big me constantly! I also had a golden syrian who bit me a few times really hard, but he was sweet other times.
Color does not determine personality, or disposition...
how they were raised, how much they were handled as babies, etc. determines personality..And of course, parents history.
Thought I wouid share some pictures..lol:

My two red eyed dwarf hammies, Hazel and Nutmeg (RIP) were evil. Actually, they wern't evil, just not properly socialized as babies, and by the time I got them (around 6 months) it seemed to be too late. I worked with them every day for a year, and though Nutmeg got tamer Hazel always bit. They never drew blood though, I assume they could have. The next two dwarves I got, one a red eyed beige, was much sweeter.
Eye colour and coat colour really has nothing to do with temperament, its all down to breeding and socialization.

my blue mottled campbell boy has ruby eyes. i really do not notice a difference in disposition between him and my black eyed boys.

Syrian hamsters once tamed will remain tame. I know Dwarfs unlike syrians need to be handled regularly to remain tame. So sometimes people think they're meaner in general.
But the eye or caot color question I don't think has any real basis.
The funny thing is I only have one hammie who can be really tempermental and moody and she has black eyes.

Yeah, my baby dwarves are tamed. They seem very polite for a hamster...
At the petstore where I got them, the store let kids hold them... so duh, they got socialized pretty fast.

i;ve had an albino syrian and he was an absolute sweetheart... but i lost him to a particularly nasty cancer at around 15 months... my vet said it was quite probably because he was an albino that he got it :( he didnt grow very big either... apparently this is common among albino syrians. my herc was a rescue tho so i don't know his background,... onl;y that he was a few weeks old when i found him (Another idiot with wrong cage i guess) i would say be very careful in getting the hammie... make sure you go to a good breeder and remember his eyesight may not be so good as a black eyed.... herc was a real sweetie and never ever bit me... just make sure you get one from good stock... ancd look into the ruby eyed black eared syrians... they tend to be hardier than the true albinos but look pretty similar.

ooh... PS, albinos are more likly to be male... something to do with the mutant gene according to my vet and i dont argue with him... what he not know about hammies isnt worth knowing.

It just means, he knows so much, so what he doesn't know isn't worth learning. Basically it's a comment saying her vet is a genius, if I read that properly.

I have many red-eyed dwarfs including albinos and a REW gerbil, they are all friendly. No difference in temperament to those with darker coloured eyes.

I have a dwarf with red eyes and he's never bitten me once. He wasn't even tame when I got him from the pet store but still he didn't bite me.
