My little Chewy had 2 babies today. ONLY 2!! Is 2 babies normal. She is still fat and i think she is still has babies inside of her. Is this possible. One of the babies died during pregnancy but the other lived but died the next time i saw him. I think they were premature and the mother ate them. Is it normal to only have 2 babies for hamsters.

A hamster takes 16-20 days to give birth to babies, if she is older then 6 months (the mother ham) her hips could of fused together creating a big complication in the birthing process..meaning she can't get the babies out. Take her to the vet where she can be looked at and treated.

It's not unheard of for dwarfs to have small litters, that's why I asked.
If she was a syrian I would be more concerned in general.
Also are you absolutely sure there went more pups and she ate some?

My dwarf never ate her pups..she would give them to me if she didnt want them and I would put her with a saraget mother.

None of my females did either, I got lucky. but I know a breeder who had one female who continuiously ater her pups. It was odd. Every single time she got pregnant she ate the entire litter alomst immediately.

I'm curious, but have any of you ever raised a pup that was abandoned? Like, you had to hand raise it? Would it be possible?

This thread here was by someone who had to hand raise an orphaned hamster. Nobody expected the little guy to make it but he did. This is very rare!

She did stop breeding her. I just thought it was so odd any how.
I've never tried hand raising I hae basically used the equilivant of a wet nurse when I've had females reject their young.

I've never had to handraise I always had 2 hammies having babies around the same time, so when one of the moms didnt want to pup, I would just put it with the other one and they would do fine.

TiaMaria- how would you keep the other mother from killing the new babies? Wouldn't she not accept their scent, and ignore or kill them too?

The 2 females that were bred nested together in the same cage, so they knew each other very well and there scent. SO when I transfered the babies over to different cages they were very pleased to have another. None of my babies were EVER killed by a mother or a mother sarogate.
