Okay, I am going to Buffalo, New York on Saturday July 8th (2006) for 2 weeks. It is a 6-7 hour drive. And I am bringing Opie as well as my dog Sparky.
Now, from previous years (about 3 or 4), we have always brought Sparky and kept her in a dog crate in the trunk and she doesn't bark and she is fine. We stop every two hours or so to let her out and give her some water/food.
BUT, I have never brought a hamster that I have owned to Buffalo. Here's the stuff I am going to do:
-Put Opie in a carrying cage that I have (those Kritter Keepers)
-Only give him his wooden house and SOME food (not in a bowl) and bedding
-Hold his cage straight on my lap, or put it in a secure place.
Is there ANYTHING else I should do or know? I will have access to a computer in Buffalo and will tell you how Opie was in the car.
THANKS! :)

you may want to put some cucumbers in the cage. These naturally have a lot of H2O content therefore you won't need a water bottle which are terrible for car rides. Also be aware of the temperature in the car. I'm assuming you'll have the AC on just becaureful Opie's not in direct line of a ven don't want him to get too cold.
Try to keep him out of direct sunlight and don't open his cage at any of the stops or on the ride.

Okay, cucumbers, good idea. Yes, the AC will be on, and he won't be next to a vent. I'll make sure that it is a comfortable temperature.
Thanks! :)

During the ride in the car, Opie did GREAT! I was so happy and relieved that he went to sleep in his wooden house. I set him up all nice at my grandma's house and he is doing fantastic! He was running on his wheel and drinking water and everything, thanks for all your advice!! :)

Heya:) .Yeh i agree with alot of the posts in here.I think you should take your lil hammie with you, when i brought my hammie i got it in essex and have to travel 40mins home in a car with her she loved it,and shes come to london to visit my boyfriends family a few times.:) I got some advice Ok now here's the trick to traveling with a Hamster. A wire cage is a must, (my thoughts anyway.) Clip the water bottle on the cage, then under the spicket, place a miniature bread pan, clothes pen this to the wire side of the cage. put bedding in the pan. this will keep your cage dry except for the bedding in the pan from the water bottle leaking. some one i know does this everyday while traveling on there truck. More tips for the traveling hamster cage, use a towel blanket or whatever works to keep the cage more level. Seat belt in if the cage is on the seat, or put the cage on the floor of the car.all of hammies toys are attached to the side of her cage by zip ties. wood chews and such. her wheel is attached to the side of the cage too, her old wire wheel was attached by zip ties. Hammies house on the top shelf, I put holes in and yes I zip tied it too the wire wall. Her lader is also zip tied. Nothing in Hammies cage can move do to sudden stops or bumps on the road.leave corners open as she likes to dig in them a lot.Hope this helps, Hamsters travel great! Oh yes, if it's a bright day or you have the windows down or the air cond on then you might want to cover the cage part way with a towel.:) I hope my advice will help you and good luck on you journey and have a great time in scotland:)
R.I.P Baba dec 04-june 06 love you forever baby x:(
