Ok, this scares the bajeezus out of me. After my pup's vaccinations are said and done, is there still a chance he can get parvo? How can I prevent it? What causes it?

well there's alway a chance of anything happening...and no vet, just like no doctor will tell you anything is 100% effective...however, after all the vaccinations are complete, and as long as you are not taking him to dog parks or any other place right now where unfamiliar dogs are, he will be fine...just make sure you follow up with all his shots!

I have a rather long story in a thread about my struggle with parvo. 2 of my dogs, when puppies, got parvo.. one almost died. He was about 7 weeks when he actually got the parvo, and he had one of his vaccinations, he was never allowed outside..actually, he was never allowed out of one bedroom. He stayed in the emergency vet clinic for 10 days.. He would look better, then worse..$8,000... and he is not doing good at all... we were thinking about putting him down, and decided to try one more day.. and the next day he was doing so well we could take him home.

He is a happy, healthy 10 month old now!!

Good Luck! And be careful! Take you shoes off when you get home to see him, keep a hand sanitizer with you...parvo is everywhere, you can track it in on your shoes!

GOOD LUCK!!

Parvo is exceedingly widespread virus and really difficult to kill. Bleach works great, and is an inexpensive cleaner. It lives in the ground, brough by infected dogs. It can travel, so for example, it can be brought in on a birds feet that sits on his bowl outside. Generally, keep things clean, don't bring him anywhere new until all shots are done, and you should be fine.
