well since i'm not liking the birds current cage, i'm currently welding a new one together for them...gonan take some time, but they'll like it i think...only problem i'm having is the dimensions of it. I'm using the things that ppl use to make cube cages liek for cavies and ferrets, but so far i'm thinking making it only 2 squares high which would be 28". which is more important width, depth, or height?? right now i plan on making it 28x28x28. would that be enough for 3 budgies ya think to live comfortable?? i could make it 28x28x42..i've been playing around with dimensions for a week now still not sure which way to go. oh let me tell ya.. you think these cube cages aren't made of much, this steel stuff is right tough as i'm really laying a thick bead down and NO warpage whatsoever. this stuff could hold ppl up lol

i highly suggest just buying another cage. The chemicals released from the metals could harm your bird. Just be careful. Have fun and be safe.

not doubting the chemical change, but EVERY bird cage i have ever seen has been welded. i plan on painting this cage after i'm done after i grind the welds down a bit and make it look smooth. the cage my budgies are in right now, which is a store bought cage is extensively welded. they appear to be spot welded or maybe even TIG, but welded nonetheless

Generally they are safe if they are PVC coated/certain paint (can't rememer the name) and even galvanised is fine for most birds (not big chewers) if it is washed first.

Most importantly for birds is width and length (they aren't helicopters so height is not a big a deal!) Basically build as large as you can with the space that you have available.
