so, we're buying our first house next friday and want to adopt a dog. We went all the way to RI and met a lovely pit bull mix girl, who we applied to adopt. Still waiting to hear back...My fiance is concerned about home insurance, since many companies will not insure homes with pits, rottis, ect...the dog's trainer suggested we just license her as a mix, since she clearly is, and while we all think she's got pit in her, who's to say? She's brindle and shaped kinda like a pit, but longer and leaner. does any one have any experience w/ home insurance and 'undesirable' breeds mixed with something else?.

Unfortinitly any dog with a squared off body, regardless of breed, will be called a pit or pit mix. If it is on any of the paper work your going to have to list her as a pit mix. You may be able to get away with boxer mix or something.
What I would do is if thee is any other way to list her do that. Then take her through several rounds of obedience training and then put her through CGC (Canine Good Citizen) That way it will show that she is a good dog with responsible owners.
Good Luck on the application. Maybe you can change insurance companies.

We have what was called a "pit bull mix" and Panzer Lee isn't...he is brindle colored and muscular, but petitely boned and I really don't think he has pittie in him. (Though I love pits and have nothing against them.) So we had the shelter put down whippet mix (which is honestly what I think he is--whippet/terrier) on his adoption papers, and that's what he is listed as at my vet clinic. If you can get the documents to say mix or some other type of mix, I would do it.
And some insurance companies will just ask if you train your dog to guard and if you say yes, then they won't insure you....mine has never asked what breeds we have, just if they have attacked or bitten and if they are used as guard dogs.
Good luck. I hope it works out. Pitties and mixes need homes too! :)

I have had a little experience with this myself, first my rotty cost my mom home owners years ago, but mosre recently we almost couldnt get home owners becasue of our 2 boxers. not becuase they are boxers, but because they werent confinced they wernet pit bulls, I had to show there papers to prove it to the ins. company, they still had a raised eyebrow, but insured us anyway, it is a complicated ordeal with them. I think the breeds vary by location too, here dalmations are a big nono, becasue in our area more of those breeds have attacked than pit bulls and rotties combined, I would do what ever I could to see you can keep your baby and not let a stupid ins. company ditate your life, maybe the local vet could give you some ideas??

If I was you I would put it as a mix or the other mix it is, or you might get away with a boxer mix, I have seen some boxers that look a little like pits, whose to say it's not a boxer mixed with a smaller breed and came out looking like she does?
I have a husky/lab mix, and the insurance wouldn't cover huskies (they're are mean, vicious etc) she is a lab mix.

Just found out she went to the vet's friday, got spayed and UTD on shots, heartworm tested. They listed her as an am. staff mix...some people insist that breed=pitts, some say they're different? I dunno, but the vet out it on her rabies certificate, so that's what she must be in town license, ect.. a local news channel ran a story about dog breeds and home insurance...i looked online at their list some companies consider 'dangerous' and won't insure...of course, rottis, pitts, boxers...but Labs, goldens, huskys? i don't think I've ever seen a visciuos golden, and I worked at a vet's a few years...I think some breeds, people just figure are fine, who would think a golden would bite? So they let their child tease them, touch them while they're eating ect... lo and behold, the dog bites, suddenly it's 'bad'. Never the person's responsibility to respect that dogs are animals with instincts, huh?Quick blurb on the news the other night made me furious- a chocolate lab disfigured an 8 yr. old girl walking by his house. the neighbors all came out to complain how they had told the owner to leash up the dog, it was terrorizing everyone in the neighborhood. 2 things made me mad- 1) this dog had a biting history, yet was let loose outside 2) the neighbor's claim all these threatening iccidents with the dog, yet no one ever called the animal officer in town to complain the leash law wasn't being complied with. Now this dog will most likely be put down. On a bright note, our adoption of our girl is coming along well- we think we're picking her up 7/3, so we can be home with her the long weekend. We are soooo excited- this poor girl was going to be PTS at a RI animal control facility. she had been there over a year, they claimed she aggressive. Numerous animal rescue groups worked hard, fighting tooth and nail, to remove her and 4 other' dangerous, aggressive' dogs who had been at the shelter for long times, and were sudenly 'unadoptable' and going to be PTS. Well, we met our girl, who's been evaluated and temp. tested by 2 different cert. trianers...she is a big LOVE! We are over the moon, and counting the days until our girl finally comes to her home. She's waited a long time for the love and attention she deserves! OK, so my fiance thinks I am insane driving 2 hrs. each way to RI for our dig, when their are plenty looking for homes within 1/2 an hour of us, but i just know that she is the one for us, and we for her, and it's a great match, well worth the trip. We are also definitely saving a life, you know?
