Hey all,
I have had a male parakeet for 6 months now, and since about 2 weeks ago, the small area above his nose (you could say his forehead) has become a bit red. It looked like blood, so we took him to the avian doctor and the doctor told us that had gotten sick possibly because of the AC being near him. So, he gave us some medicine (antibiotics) and also took some blood from our bird for further research.

After about a week later, we got a phone call from the hospital saying that apparently, our bird had a damaged liver, and was also producing much less white blood cells than he would have to be producing if he was healthy. Could this be something like blood cancer? Anyways, he gave us some new antibiotics and something for his liver, and also a new food diet (Avian Maintenance-Fruit Blended, or something a like).

We were using Forti-Diet before, as suggested so by PetsMart, but the doctor disapproved of that diet and said that it was bad for the birds stomach.

I have a few questions for you guys:

1.Has anyone's bird ever experienced this disease?
2.Is the food suggestion correct?
3.Can anyone give me some good advice, on how to take care of my bird now that he is weaker.

Sorry for the long post, but I am very worried about my bird, the doctor said that he probably will not make it :(, but that we should just wait and see what will happen.

Thanks in advance,
Sam

you poor thing :( it does soundd quite bad.

Millet is always good... it's chocca with calories and birds love it. and i would say go with your vet's recoomendation for food. just mix it in gradually so you're not changing over night... although you may find bird eats it happily... it sounded yummi!

any treats you would usually give him i would keep giving... bird will enjoy them and eat better... and if vet is really that pessimistic they wont do any harm right?

half cover birds cage and keep warm and calm. your bird might catch a chill or cold from the ac... but wouldnt affect the blood count or anything.

good luck x
