I browse most forums on PetsHub. And I noticed that all there is posted on the Sugar Glider forum is people selling and giving away sugar gliders. On all the other forums, people don't give away as many pets as on the SG forum!! It just seems wierd!!!

Anyone else notice, and it annoyed by it?

The problem is people purchase them and don't know what they are getting into. I mean us true glider people are die hard glider lovers. People get them b/c they are so cute and fuzzy but get home and don't want to feed fresh fruits and veggies much less make BML. When I have people call me and ask me "what's a sugar glider b/c I want one" blows my mind. You don't even know what they are much less that you want one. I spend more time teaching about gliders than I do selling them and I sell a lot of gliders. Plus gliders can't be left alone for several days while you go out of town, not many realize that you need to hire a glider sitter.
You are right it is very sad and really I feel guilty b/c I do add to numbers of homeless gliders.... I say this b/c I am a breeder BUT I stress the importance of all their needs...everything I know I try to pass on. All I can hope is I gave the correct info and a tame loving glider. I have people call me often wanting to know how much I charge their response is I can get one $75 cheaper at the flea market or somewhere else.... I respond by asking do they have any questions? I don't care if you buy from me or another breeder but I'm available for any questions anytime.
People think breeders make money   good breeders with healthy gliders don't make money trust me.

I agree with missbee, people dont understand what they are getting themselves into when they get these animals that require so much care and then they end up dumping them or rehoming them.

sugar gliders are becoming very popular in the U.S. and it saddens me that people are only getting them because they are cute and fuzzy (as missbee stated in her post)... it just infiriates me!

I was amazed at how many there are here in California where they are illegal. And ferrets too...Caliornia has one of the highest amount of ferrets in the U.S.

i also agree, people dont quite get that a glider isnt just happy having a stock pile of food.. You cant just feed them with a big feeder & forget them. They need attention everyday to stay tame. They need food chopped & made for them nightly & there are lots of other reasons. Gliders arent an easy pet.

I have seen a lot of rescues come & go. I do breed, but everyone buying from me signs a contract.. It states that i get first chance to get the animal back if they want to sell. I then know my gliders wont end up in shelters.. But yes, since i breed, i also feel its my duty to rescue as well.. & i do. Just this year we have re homed 10 rescues & 4 of our own bred here.

I just find it sad people dont want to chat about them more.. but yet instead the forums are cluttered with sales..( yes, im also guilty of.)

I post something of this nature before....

This is not the news paper and its not a place to advertise. This is a forum to talk about our sugar gliders. The past like 10 threads are nothing but people either selling or wanting to buy gliders. Its getting out of hand it really is. So please people there are a ton of sites to post ads about anything you want so lets try to keep it a place to talk about gliders.

Only one person agreed with me.

But yes it is getting out of hand.

If I had gliders I'd be talking about them all the time.

Unfortunately I have my hands full financially with what I've got and I know there is no way I could afford gliders right now. Thus, I'm waiting until I can find good work to get some. I have been researching and will continue to do so up until I get gliders of my own.

The cuteness factor pertains to many pets including puppies and kittens and baby bunnies, etc. People get them when they're cute and forget them in a month when they've had too much cute and don't care about it anymore.

Missbee - People are just annoyed because there are more threads on selling/buying gliders then there are about glider care and just in general glider talk... you dont have to be rude about it. I feel the same way as 2sugakids, there should be more threads about glider care etc then of people selling their gliders and wanting to buy gliders. There are so many people out there that just want a glider because they are "cute" etc and then they dont realize how much work and time they take and end up dumping them, its really all quit sad IMHO.

i don't come on pets hub very often and this is the reason why. i have 8 gliders now i don't need to buy anymore. but if people asked more questions and new more about them then maybe there would not be so many people trying to sell them. and to all the breeders out there I'm not trying to be rude so please don't take it as i am. maybe if people cut down on breeding there would not be so many gliders to re home. i have one breeding pair and i have not sold any yet. i have only had them for about four months. but to the people that want to buy them has to learn about them first. and i feel if they don't want to learn them they don't want a glider and they wont get one from me. i learned a lot of what i know on gc and still learning. i don't ever plan on getting rid of any of my gliders. when i got them i got them for life. i would love to have more but i don't want to get more than i can handle. its hard taking care of 8 gliders. but i love to do it. and that's the problem with a lot of people they get gliders not knowing a lot about them. and then after a few months they just loose interest in them. i feel if you get a pet don't matter what it is it should be for life. i hope i didn't offend anybody and if i did i'm sorry.

Yes a lot of people don't know what they are getting themselves into.. All they think is what a cool pet to have.. Its not one of the impulse buyers that need to be buying you need to do a little research.. I have been in sugar gliders for over 4 years and it very hard work but they are all worth it if you are in for the long haul..

So i would say i would have to diffently agree with missbee

I'm a bit confused by your statement. You are saying that you don't think people should breed their sugar gliders because. Then in the very next sentence, you talk about how you breed your sugar gliders?????

i didn't say people should stop breeding just cut back on breeding. its just that some people not all but some breed just so they can say they have had the experience of having joeys. or they want to breed just because they think that joeys are cute. my point is that i think this forum should be for the health of gliders and not for just selling them

I have to admit I knew nothing about gliders when I got my 1st. My (now ex) boyfriends mother had him and when ever we would come to visit I spent most of my time with Sugar. She had bought him from someone else (who didn't take good care of him) because he was cute and fuzzy. Oneday she came by and gave him to me said she didn't want him anymore. I spent a great deal of time on the net to findout everything I could to give him a great life. I think everyone should do this before getting animals!!!!!! This was about 6 years ago when it wasn't very easy to find information on them as pets. I am glad to see that it is much easyer to learn how to take care of them. Sugar gliders do take alot of time and care. They can be great family members, but I cannot stress enough that people should really learn everything they can before taking in any animals, be very committed, and remember they may be animals but they do have feelings too. So many animals get depressed and sick because people don't know how or have the time to take care of them!

Think before you addopt!

I have a breeding pair, and with all the extra work you put into them with the joeys, the money doesnt really matter. People are insane to just buy suggies for breeding purposes.
