I bought a TB filly in may. She is now 16 months old. I have been working on lunging her. We have been doing it for almost 2 months. She has the best ground manners, and is the sweetest little filly. Very smart!! Almost too smart. My problem is, she has recently started facing me when im lunging her. Ok... She does fine at the walk and trot, its when I ask her to canter, she will go into the canter fine and then like one/two strides in she kinda hops and faces me. I ask her to move forward but she knows how to stay infront of me so that i cant get behind her. She will start backing up til she is in a corner or cant back up anymore then with some incouragement she will move out. Normally i use the end of the lunge line or have a whip. i dont whip her with it, i just have it with me for back-up. So she will do this maybe two times and then everythings fine. But we spend so much time trying to get her going that it just messes everything up. then i have no time to finish up. I only work her 10-15 minutes two times a week. I know she understands what im asking. I just dont know if she is saying "NO I DONT WANT TO." Or if this is just something yearlings do. I have never run across this before when I have been working young horses. I know some of you might be thinking 'omg shes lunging her horse." Well im sorry you feel that way. Im not doing anything she herself doesnt do in the field. Infact I maybe working her less then she works herself outside while playing. I have talked to my vet about working her and he thinks its fine. AS LONG AS ITS NOT OVER DONE. and its not. I do not have a round pen at my barn. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? PLEASE HELP!!!:( :crybucket

I have a three year old horse which we got trained last summer and when she wont move (and you cant get to her hind end) then what I do is use your whip to hit the ground next to her front end, and if htat doesnt work than you can maybe tap her shoulder with the whip. By doing this you should get the front end to move the direction you want the horse to move and then you can direct the hind end from that position. this has always worked with the way my horse is trained. I hope this makes sense for you!! =)
