Hi all!

I think I’ve decided to get a friend bird for my Lovebird. I’ve got spare cages and my first thought would be that (after the 6 weeks quarantine of course) they would probably have cages next to each other and share playtimes. Only question is any suggestion on what bird? I don’t think I can really have another lovie as I can’t be 100% of sex and I don’t know mine’s genetic history so… well you all know the rest. (can I have another lovie? LOL would a black cap and a peach try to breed?)

She’s a small black cap so an English budgie would be the most obvious option, but I was wondering if anyone else has any other ideas? Are there any other lovebird / budgie sized parakeets anyone can think of?

I look forward to your suggestions x

You can get your bird sexed at the vet.
Another love bird is best. Intermingling species is not a good idea.

A birds tend to breed in the spring and even then the babies rarely hatch when not taken care of properly but it takes a lot out of the mother.

It's the taking it out of the mother i am worried about as am 99% sure mine is a female and as she was a rescue her genetics are unknows and she has some scarring around her bottom so is likly to beomce egg bound... in short i'm not going there.

My vet quoted me £50 to sex a bird... which is steep... but the real issue is it takes 6-8 weeks... so i could find another bird and have it sexed only for it to then go to another home.... or i buy and sex a bird... fall in love with it and then find out they ccan't be trusted together lol

AND she doesnt seem to get on with other lovies (at least her own species too well) but is perfectly happy with other keets (a lot of my friends/family keep birds but she's bonded to me but i cant be ther 24/7 like a companion bird could) so long as they are about her size... so i was thinking budgie or pacific / constellation parakeet.

any further thoughts?
